Holy Mass on TV for Filipino Migrants

Fr. Erno Diaz, Rector of the Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz in New York, would like Filipino migrants and overseas workers brought closer to God through Mass and spiritual instruction on television.

He envisions a “Mother Angelica” of EWTN kind of broadcast from the chapel in New York. San Lorenzo Ruiz, after all, is the patron saint of Filipino migrants and OFWs.

Father Erno formed the Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz New York Advisory Council in Manila. The group is mounting the fund-raising José Mari Chan dinner concert on July 11 at Manila Hotel.

At the helm are Grace Pasigan, who helped the chapel when she was in New York; Philip Lee, president of the Rotary Club in Chinatown; Isabel Tobias, secretary-general of Presidential Council for Values Formation; Candido Dizon, director of the board of Manuel L. Quezon University; Geraldine Diaz, president of Philippine Women’s University (PWU) Alumni Association; Sonia Atabug, PR director of PWU; Erlinda Chincuanco, presidential assistant for PWU Alumni Affairs; Dr. Federico Macaranas, executive director of Asian Institute of Management; and myself as vice chair. Father Erno is founding chair.

The Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz on 378 Broome St., Lower Manhattan, was designated by Cardinal Edward Egan for the Filipino community. It is attached to the Philippine Pastoral Center of the Filipino Apostolate of the Archdiocese of New York.

It opened in 2005 and was blessed by Bishop Precioso Cantillas, chair of the Philippine Episcopal Commission on Migration. President Macapagal-Arroyo attended.

Former Senator Helena Benitez supports the airing of Mass honoring San Lorenzo for Filipino migrants. Her niece Dr. Amelou Reyes, president of PWU, and Dr. Dolores Baja-Lasan, PWU chancellor, support the same.
