After playing coy in the days surrounding their well announced semi-secret wedding, rapper Nick Cannon and singer Mariah Carey are finally stepping out as a married couple. The pair made their first appearance as man and woman at the Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World" event Thursday night, and more material has emerged from their interview with People magazine about their nuptials in the Bahamas last week.

Continuing an ongoing celebrity tradition, Mariah Carey, 38, and Nick Cannon, 27, told the magazine that they got tattoos to mark the occasion — which was a tip-off to some friends about the wedding. "One thing [few people] knew was we got tattoos a few weeks earlier. So anyone who saw my tattoo wasn't surprised," said Carey.

Cannon added, "To me rings are special and exciting, but tattoos mean more than anything. They're forever and ever. They professed our love."

Carey said she only told "about four people" about the wedding, and only a dozen guests attended the sunset affair, where they dined on Maine lobster and sipped Dom Perignon champagne. The couple wed at Carey's Bahamian estate on April 30 after sparks began flying just a few months earlier in late March on the set of Carey's new video, "Bye Bye," in which she cast Cannon as her love interest.

"From the first time we sat down to discuss the video at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we connected," Cannon told the magazine. "We had so much in common spiritually, and we laugh at the same things. I didn't have to put on my mac-daddy-suave mode. I was able to be myself with her. We are both eternally 12 years old."

The wedding was presided over by Carey's pastor, Clarence Keaton, who flew in from New York. "The whole wedding was really beautiful and sweet," she said. "Being there with loved ones under the sky ... it was a spiritual moment." (The role of the Bahamian pastor who earlier said he presided over the wedding was unclear.)

Watching his bride-to-be walk down the aisle, the typically gregarious Cannon said he was struck speechless. "I was elated, but I was thinking, 'Don't pass out,' " he told People. "[The pastor] said, 'The eyes are the window to the soul,' then gave us an entire minute to stare into each other's eyes. So I was saying, 'Don't cry.' "

Scarlett Johansson Releases Her First Album!

About 2 weeks from now, the 23-year-old Hollywood screen goddess Scarlett Johansson will release her debut album entitled: Anywhere I Lay My Head. People.com says that the album mostly consists of Tom Waits covers, as well as “Song for Jo,” a track that Scarlett Johansson wrote with her producer, TV on the Radio’s David Andrew Sitek. The first single, “Falling Down,” and “Fannin Street” have David Bowie singing backup.

Describing “Song for Jo,” Johansson says, “It was a memory of someone that's very close to me: a vague and blissful memory of my wanton youth or whatever. It's a song about friendship, I think.”

He calls her sound “Tinkerbell on cough syrup.”

When asked about what her fans will think as she includes music to her résumé, she says, “I never worry about that kind of thing. I hope people enjoy it.” But why Tom Waits? “I'm not trying to prove anything on this album,” Johansson says in a statement that’s on People.com. “I just love [Tom Waits's] music.”

Scarlett Johansson recently announced her engagement to Ryan Reynolds. She will be in Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona next. Her album, Anywhere I Lay My Head is available May 20 on Rhino Records.

Well, that investigation has led to her arrest!

"I can confirm that a 24-year-old woman has been arrested by appointment at a central London police station and is currently in custody," a Scotland Yard spokesman told People.com.

It is a policy in England to arrest a suspect before questioning them in connection to a possible crime, so Amy has not been charged with anything, yet, but the allegedly attacked man says all he tried to do was hail Amy a cab when she headbutted him.

Cameron Diaz pulls out of premiere over Dad's death

Cameron Diaz has pulled out of the London premiere of her new movie following the death of her father. Emilio Diaz died from pneumonia on Tuesday aged 58, after the illness developed from a recent bout of influenza. And the actress has cancelled all of her forthcoming engagements as a result, including the U.K. premiere of What Happens In Vegas next Tuesday with co-star Ashton Kutcher.

The organisers say: "Sadly she won't be attending. We're waiting for more news but as far as we are aware the premiere is still going ahead as planned with Ashton." Shooting on her latest movie 'My Sister's Keeper' has also been temporarily suspended to allow Diaz time to mourn.

Two action-adventure series from GMA-7, Kamandag and Joaquin Bordado, are battling it out for the throne in the primetime race. While Richard Gutierrez's Kamandag got the upper hand Tuesday (April 1) and Wedneday (April 2), Robin Padilla's Joaquin Bordado grabbed the lead Thursday (April 3).

The heavy drama Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita, the primetime newscast 24 Oras, and the reality show Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus were all consistent in their third to fifth positions.

The battle for the sixth and tenth positions, on the other hand, is so tight that no particular show held the same slot for three consecutive days.

Meanwhile, Eat Bulaga! remains unbeatable in the daytime race with Daisy Siete trailing behind at No. 2.

Madonna has spoken out about troubled singer Britney Spears, and revealed she works out to Spears' new album Blackout.
"I actually love Britney's new album, she said in an interview with New York radio station Z100 FM."I usually work out to her record. I do a combination of Pilates and dance aerobics."They (the media) need to step off. For real, let's go save her."

Madonna, 49, said her daughter, Lourdes, 11, feels the same way."She knows Britney, (but) she doesn't really watch TV or read gossip stuff," the pop star said in the interview.

"I think she sort of gets the drift of what's going on, and I think she feels very protective of Britney."

Madonna also revealed she will only perform Like A Virgin again for $30 million.

The star, who is set to embark on a tour this autumn, is tired of singing her early hits and has no desire to include them in her set lists.

She said: "I'm not sure I can sing Holiday or Like A Virgin ever again. I just can't - unless somebody paid me like $30 million or something. Like if some Russian guy wants me to come to the wedding he's going to have to a 17-year-old, you know it."

The singer, who gave Justin Timberlake a vitamin injection in his butt while they were recording 4 Minutes after he complained of a cold, insists she asked him to drop his trousers for purely professional reasons.

Madonna said: "First of all, I've seen enough butt. The reason I gave him a B-12 shot is because we only had a certain amount of days in the studio and I didn't want him to use that as a lame-a** excuse not to come to work.

"It's got nothing to do with butt. I promise you. Listen, I don't need to give him a shot to see his butt!"

Madonna denied her marriage to director Guy Ritchie is in trouble calling the speculation "ridiculous", but admitted the couple have to work hard at their relationship like everyone else.

American Idol Mentors Will Be Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, and Andrew Lloyd Webber

Before American Idol 7 began, American Idol producers revealed that they were going to focus more on the contestants this year, and they have lived up to that promise. Only four mentors have been announced for American Idol this year. During the most recent American Idol results show, Ryan Seacrest revealved that Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond and Andrew Lloyd Webber would serve as mentors during American Idol 7.

These four mentors will aid the finalists in preparing for their Tuesday night performances. On the Wednesday night results show, these mentors will take the stge to perform live. FOX has not yet announced which mentors will appear on which specific dates.

One thing that at least three of the mentors share in common is that they have new albums that either have recently been released or will be released soon. Mariah Carey has a new album called “E=MC²” that is scheduled for an April 15, 2008 release. “E=MC²” will be the eleventh album of Mariah Carey’s career. The first single from the album called “Touch My Body” is already a Top 10 radio hit.

Dolly Parton recently released a new album called “Backwoods Barbie.” The album entered the Billboard pop albums chart at number seventeen and entered both the country and indie album charts at number two. Dolly Parton is going on a world tour in support of “Backwoods Barbie.”

Neil Diamond has a new album called “Home Before Dark,” which is scheduled for a May 6, 2008 release date. Neil Diamond is teaming with acclaimed producer Rick Rubin on the album.

While Andrew Lloyd Webber might not have an album in the works, the world famous composer is producing a sequel to the film version of “The Phantom of the Opera.” The sequel will premiere in 2008 and is being directed by Jack O’Brien.

SWEET VICTORY for Manny Pacquiao

MANNY Pacquiao finally solved the puzzle that is Juan Manuel Marquez by eking out a close and exciting split decision victory to etch his name in the record books of professional boxing.

He also erased the ghost of his past defeat to Erik Morales three Palm Sundays ago.

Yes, Manny suffered his lone loss to a Mexican boxer at the MGM Grand Hotel almost four years ago after he was outboxed by Morales in a classic duel between two super featherweights. With his win over Marquez Sunday, not only did he exorcise that defeat but he also over come the bad luck that is associated with number 13.

For the uninitiated, his rematch with Marquez was Manny's 13th bout in the US. Knowing how superstitious the new World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight champion is, the victory was a leap against all odds for the very religious Filipino boxing superstar.

In the process, he kept his winning ways against Mexican boxers while avenging the losses of Filipino boxers to his vanquished opponent.

Manny climbed the ring a heavy favorite but knew that Marquez was a dangerous opponent.

Marquez showed flashes of aggressiveness and was sharp with his counters early on. He even delivered a left hook followed by crushing right straight to the new champion in the second round that staggered the Filipino momentarily.

But Manny came back in the third round with a short left hook that sent Marquez crushing on his back. Manny pressed on for the kill but Marquez, noted for his sweet counterpunching style weathered the attack as the bell sounded for the round.

In the fifth round, an accidental clash of heads opened a cut in Marquez's right eyelid.

In Round 7, it was Manny's turn to suffer a nasty cut on his eyelid courtesy of a left hook from Marquez.

That cut bothered him in rounds eight and nine when he repeatedly got caught by big right straights from Marquez.
And it looked like it would become a repeat of his loss to Morales.

But the indomitable warrior in Manny dug from his bag of tricks and came back in the latter rounds to repeatedly rock Marquez who bled profusely late in the bout.

When the verdict was announced, Manny snatched away the WBC belt of Marquez and crowned himself the new Ring Magazine super featherweight king.

The camp of Marquez was shocked in disbelief as one of the judges had him ahead 115-112 and it was the first verdict announced. When the scores of the other judges were read by Michael Buffer, Pacquiao's camp jumped in jubilee as the Manny's name was announced "new super featherweight champion of the world."

It was the third lineal title for Manny, which established him as the only boxer in the history of sports to capture both the flyweight and super featherweight crown and also held the super bantamweight diadem in between. Had Marco Antonio Barrera not abdicated his featherweight title when he went up against Pacquiao in 2003 for refusing to pay the sanctioning fee against an early opponent, Manny would have been a four division champion.

But that could come soon as his Sunday's championship feat will be his last in the super featherweight. And the fans had a peak of what could become a history-setting achievement in WBC lightweight champion David Diaz who fought in the under card. Diaz won a unanimous victory against a game Ramon Montano.
That bout is already agreed upon as both Diaz and Pacquiao are promoted by Top Rank's Bob Arum.

Here is the round by round account of Manny's hard-earned victory against Marquez:

Manny climbed the ring first and was in his white trunks in obvious departure of the red trunks he wore when he first fought Marquez. He appeared relax and was smiling and acknowledging fans on his way to the ring.
Marquez on the other hand wore black trunks and carried a mean look on his face.

Round 1

Both fighters appeared tentative and measuring each other and looking what each has to offer. Manny missed with his customary lazy jabs but scored first with a right straight to the body. Marquez showed some aggressiveness and was uncharacteristically throwing his jabs before Manny could uncork his. A low blow from Marquez in the leg of Manny earned him an admonition from referee Ken Bayless. Neither fighter landed a meaningful punch although Marquez was more active midway through the round. MARQUEZ 10-9

Round 2

Manny opened the round looking to engage Marquez by being aggressive with his jabs and left straights. Marquez was landing with his right straights and left hooks to the body of Pacquiao. Marquez was accurate with his counters and with few seconds left in the round, he uncorked a thundering left hook that snapped down Manny's head as the Filipino kept on pressing. MARQUEZ 10-9

Round 3

Manny was more active. He was stiffening his jabs and landed a three-punch combination early in the round. Marquez however landed with right leads of his own. The tow boxers slugged it out late in the rounds and with less than 30 seconds left in the third, Manny landed a short but very powerful left hook to the chin of Marquez who was sent crashing to the canvass on his back. He beat the count and Manny pressed in for the kill as the bell sounded. Marquez was still wobbly and nearly went to the wrong corner as he gathered his wits.PACQUIAO 10-8

Round 4

Marquez was still hurting and Pacquiao exploited this with lunging left straights that often found their target. Manny has closed the distance between him and Marquez but Marquez somehow recovered late in the rounds and also connected with several counters of his own.PACQUIAO 10-9

Round 5

Manny somehow slowed down on his attack and was waiting for Marquez to commit. Marquez connected with a left hook to the body of Manny and a big right to the face of the Filipino champ before the round ended. An accidental clash of heads open a small cut on the right eyelid of Marquez.MARQUEZ 10-9

Round 6

Marquez showed sign he has recovered from the knockdown in the third and was connected with his right leads to the face of Manny was backing down. Marquez landed some two to three punch combinations and has regained confidence.MARQUEZ 10-9

Round 7

Manny pressed on his attacks and the two exchange furious combinations in the middle of the ring. Manny is getting the better of the exchanges. Marquez landed a glancing left hook that opened a big cut on the right eyelid of Manny.PACQUIAO 10-9

Marquez now has a target and was throwing more jabs at the right eye of Manny who was bothered by the blood flowing inside his eyes. Manny was backing down from Marquez and was repeatedly tagged by right leads from the Mexican.MARQUEZ 10-9

Still bothered with blood flowing for m his cut eyelid, Manny connects with big lefts and snapped the head of Marquez several times. The cut on Marquez's eye worsened and he was now bleeding profusedly. Round 10

Sensing he had Marquez in trouble, Manny continued to press Marquez with powerful lefts but Marquez answered with several big rights of his own. The two locked horns and threw several of their money punches but Manny landed with a big left as the bell sounded.PACQUIAO 10-9

The penultimate round. Marquez landed a low blow that hurt Pacquiao. He was given a warning. Marquez' combinations were no longer as crisp and as swift as in the early goings but he continued to fight back and landed several shots against Manny. Manny however sensed that his foe's punches have lost their sting and landed several big lefts at the end of the eleventh to again steal the round from Marquez.PACQUIAO 10-9

Round 12

The crowd was on their fifth as the two boxers touched gloves to begin the round. Marquez was still landing his right hands but Manny also repeatedly threw big lefts. Sheryl Cruz and husband Norman Bustos file for divorce

Sa column ng veteran entertainment columnist na si Ricky Lo sa Philippine Star ngayong araw, March 12, ibinalita niya ang paghihiwalay ng aktres na si Sheryl Cruz at ng kanyang asawa na si Norman Bustos.

Ayon kay Ricky, nakatanggap siya ng tawag mula mismo kay Norman sa San Francisco—kung saan siya nagtatrabaho bilang sheriff—kahapon, March 11.

Malungkot na sinabi ni Norman kay Ricky ang balita tungkol sa kanila ni Sheryl: "Sheryl and I are filing for divorce anytime now."

Kuwento pa ni Ricky, apat na araw bago ang tawag ni Norman ay nakatanggap siya ng email mula rito at tinatanong ang kanyang cell phone number. Ito raw ang maikling mensahe ni Norman sa kanyang email: "This is Norman Bustos, Sheryl Cruz's husband. I would like to get in contact with you as soon as possible. This is in regards to Sheryl and I..."

Matatandaang iniwan ni Sheryl ang kanyang showbiz career sa Pilipinas nang magdesisyon siyang pumunta sa Amerika at doon na manirahan kasama ng kanyang ina, ang dating aktres na si Rosemarie Sonora (nakababatang kapatid ni Susan Roces). Doon na rin sa Amerika nakilala ni Sheryl si Norman.

Ayon kay Ricky, tatlong beses nagpakasal sina Sheryl at Norman. Una ay noong 1996 sa isang civil rite sa Lake Tahoe, Nevada. On the same year, nagkaroon sila ng Catholic wedding dito sa Pilipinas na ginanap sa Ciudad Fernandina sa Greenhills. Panghuli ay noong 1997 sa isang simbahan sa San Francisco kung saan sila tuluyaang nanirahan sa isang malaki at magandang bahay na binili mismo ni Norman mula sa kanyang savings.

NO SIGNS. Huling nakita ni Ricky si Norman apat na linggo lamang ang nakalilipas nang bumisita muli ang mister ni Sheryl dito sa Pilipinas. Sinamahan ni Norman si Sheryl at ang kanilang anak na si Ashley—na magse-seven years old na sa May 25—sa reunion ng Sampaguita stars sa studio ng naturang movie company sa Quezon City.

Wala raw nahalata si Ricky na may problema sa pagsasama nina Sheryl at Norman base sa ikinilos nila sa naturang okasyon.

Pero noon pa man ay marami na ang nagtaka nang magdesisyon si Sheryl na i-resume ang kanyang showbiz career dito sa Pilipinas noong 2004, samantalang si Norman naman ay nanatili sa San Francsico kung saan ito nagtatrabaho.

Dapat sana ay bakasyon lang ang ipinunta ni Sheryl sa Pilipinas ngunit na-extend ito nang na-extend hanggang sa magdesisyon siyang dito na manirahan ulit. Bumili siya ng bahay sa isang subdivision sa Quezon City kung saan sila naninirahan ngayon ni Ashley.

Bagama't regular na bumibisita si Norman sa kanyang mag-ina dito sa Pilipinas, at ganun din si Sheryl, hindi pa rin maiwasan na itanong sa aktres kung wala ba talagang problema sa kanilang pagsasama. Tuwina, sinasabi ni Sheryl na pareho nilang desisyon ni Norman na manatili muna siya rito sa Pilipinas at ipagpatuloy ang kanyang showbiz career. Lagi ring pinabubulaanan ng dating child actress na may problema sila ng kanyang mister.

Ngunit ang tawag na natanggap ni Ricky mula kay Norman ang nagkumpirma sa matagal nang usap-usapan na may problema ang pagsasama nila ni Sheryl.

NO THIRD PARTY. Itinanggi ni Norman sa kolumnista na may third party involved sa paghihiwalay nila ni Sheryl.

Paliwanag ni Norman, "Our long periods of separation have taken their toll. Four years is a long time. She's there working and I'm here working. We have taken different career paths. I understand that she enjoys working in showbiz and she understands that I can't leave my job [in San Francisco].

"I can't join Sheryl in the Philippines and be a burden to her," dagdag niya. "You see, I'm used to working and earning my own keep since I was young and I just couldn't depend on my wife to support me. That's not me. I think we are faced with irreconcilable differences, so... This is a very hard decision for us to make. It's great when we are together but life is just hard and lonely for me when I'm alone, living by myself in our big house. It's a situation that is just unhealthy for any couple."

Sa kabila nito, iginiit ni Norman na "okay" sila ni Sheryl at mapayapa ang kanilang pag-file ng divorce.

"We have regular communication, we are friendly to each other, contrary to rumors that we have had clashes. We are okay," paglilinaw ni Norman.

Para patunayang okay sila ni Sheryl sa kabila ng pagpa-file nila ng divorce, babalik sa Pilipinas si Norman para sa ika-pitong kaarawan ng anak nilang si Ashley.

"Our main concern now is to give our daughter a good life, a good future," sabi ni Norman.

Sinubukan ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) na kunan ng pahayag si Sheryl, ngunit ayon sa manager nitong si Dolor Guevarra ay wala pang statement ang aktres tungkol sa nakatakda nilang divorce ni Norman.

Actress Claudine Barretto charged with libel and perjury by former assistant

Actress Claudine Barretto-Santiago was charged with libel and perjury before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office yesterday morning, March 11.

The complainant is a former personal assistant of Claudine named Nancy Jiji Cruz, who is a resident of No. 52 Q. Valencia Street, Barangay Valencia, Quezon City. She claimed that the actress was lying in her complaint-affidavit for qualified theft, which Claudine filed against her last January.

Cruz added in her complaint-affidavit that Claudine knew that there were no stolen or missing items in her house at No. 18 Nova Scotia Street, Loyola Grand Villas, Quezon City, and that no witness to the alleged theft was positively declared.

It was on December 27 that Claudine reported the alleged theft at the Quezon City Police District Station 9. She claimed that her former personal assistant allegedly took P300,000 worth of jewelry and cash, including several checks and the birth certificate of her son, Rodrigo Santino.

The actress told the police that she learned about the incident on Christmas day, December 25, and suspected that it was Cruz who stole the items because she allegedly left the house without asking permission.

On December 30, Margaret Barretto-Santiago, Claudine's real name, filed a case against Cruz before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office. She claimed that Cruz stole P27,000 in cash, three sacks of Folded & Hung apparel, including shirts; a boxful of Secosana bags and wallets, Randy Ortiz gowns, south sea pearl earrings, which allegedly cost P500,000, and insurance papers.

On the other hand, according to a report published in People's Journal today, March 12, Cruz denied these allegations and reasoned that it is highly improbable and physically impossible and for her to carry and bring out three sacks of clothes and shirts by herself, even with the assistance of her three-year-old kid.

Cruz further argued that she sought permission from Claudine to leave on the morning of December 26, bringing only paper bags containing Christmas gifts. Cruz also stressed that Claudine would not allow her to bring out her personal belongings, so she did not bring any bag. Furthermore, the former assistant said the security guards of the village inspected her things before she was allowed to leave.

In a separate complaint-affidavit, Cruz also charged Claudine with violation of the Social Security Act of 1997. She claimed that Claudine allegedly failed to report her employment and services for coverage with Social Security System (SSS) after she was hired as a personal assistant and domestic helper in March 2001.

The former assistant stressed that she did not enjoy the benefits of the social security law because Claudine failed to remit her contributions to the SSS.

At press time, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) is trying to contact Claudine for her side of the story.

Leo San Miguel, is the newest ZTE Witness

ZTE witness Leo San Miguel on Tuesday pointed to Ruben Reyes as the “facilitator” of the national broadband network project deal for China’s ZTE Corp.

At the resumption of the Senate inquiry into the controversial $329.48-million NBN project, San Miguel - who denied direct knowledge on alleged kickbacks and commissions taken by several individuals from the project - said Reyes’ group was ZTE’s local contact for the NBN project.

“That’s Mr. Ruben Reyes. He’s supposed to do the job. Mr Ruben Reyes is the one that introduced me to ZTE through Gen. (Quirino) dela Torre,” San Miguel said, adding that the Senate should not expect too much from his testimony since he dealt mostly on technical aspects of the project.

“My view on this whole thing is, in any business transaction, you need a Filipino group to help you and that’s Ruben Reyes’ group,” he added.

Abalos

While he confirmed that resigned Commission on Elections chairman Benjamin Abalos was talking with ZTE officials for the project, San Miguel said he does not know if Abalos was “brokering” the deal for the Chinese firm.

“Abalos… has been talking to ZTE as far as the information I’m getting,” San Miguel said. When pressed if Abalos was brokering the NBN deal for ZTE, he said: “In that sense, I don’t know but he (Abalos) has been helping.”

In his testimony, San Miguel said it was “standard” that those helping ZTE get the deal would get commissions.

“Commissions are standard. If someone helps them sell, they will get commissions… (But) the commissions are discussed among themselves,” San Miguel said.

“I am not aware of any kickbacks, ‘lagayan’,” he added.

Senator Francis Pangilinan explored this statement, asking San Miguel on the identity of those whom he said could be discussing about commissions. When further asked, San Miguel said that if somebody would get commissions from the project, it would be Reyes and “possibly” Abalos.[from:GMANews.TV]

TV Ratings (March 7-10): Its "Marimar" Fever Even on Daytime!

With three nights left before its final episode, Marimar continues to dominate the ratings game, not only in the primetime race but also in the daytime race.

Last Sunday, March 9, Marimar had its farewell party on SOP, where almost half of the show was devoted to the No. 1 primetime show in the country. This was immediately followed by a farewell special, Marimar...Isang Pasasalamat, hosted by lead stars Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes.

It was a double victory for Marimar since SOP ruled the daytime race with 21.4 percent while Marimar...Isang Pasasalamat was a close second with 19.9 percent.

Showbiz Central, meanwhile, once again won the battle of Sunday talk shows by taking the third place with 15.6 percent versus The Buzz's 12.1 percent, which is good for No. 6. Incidentally, Showbiz Central featured the "wedding" of Marimar and Sergio.

ASAP '08 tied with Your Song at No. 5 with 12.2 percent.

In the primetime race, the magazine show Mel & Joey grabbed the No. 1 position with 29.1 percent, followed by Kap's Amazing Stories (27.6 percent), Tok! Tok! Tok! Isang Milyon Pasok (26.2 percent), Rated K (21 percent), and All Star K (20.2 percent) to complete the Top 5.

Marimar also continued its domination in its regular timeslot, taking the No. 1 spot Friday (March 7) and Monday (March 10). On both nights, Kamandag and Joaquin Bordado placed second and third, respectively.

Now on its final week, the Koreanovela Coffee Prince took the fourth spot Friday with 33.6 percent but it dropped to No. 8 Monday with 23.8 percent. This was caused by the addition of another Koreanovela titled The Legend in the primetime block of GMA-7. Taking the original timeslot of Coffee Prince, The Legend premiered at No. 5 with an impressive 31.5 percent just behind 24 Oras' 31.7 percent.

TV Patrol World and Kung Fu Kids maintained their sixth and seventh positions, respectively, on both nights.

Lobo and Palos, on the other hand, were consistent at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Although Lobo hit a below-20 percent rating for the first time last Friday with 19.4 percent.

In the daytime race, Eat Bulaga! and Daisy Siete were the only consistent shows, taking the top two slots. The ranking from No. 3 to No. 10 was completely different on Friday and Monday.

Eat Bulaga! also maintained its No.1 position last Saturday (March 8) with 23 percent. StarTalk placed second with 17.6 percent while Wowowee was No. 3 with 15.2 percent.

In the primetime race, the magazine show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho was No. 1 with 34.8 percent. The rest of the Top 5 went to Imbestigador (32.1 percent), Bitoy's Funniest Videos (31.5 percent), Kakasa Ka Ba Sa Grade 5? (22.percent), and TV Patrol World (17.8 percent).

The controversial Binibining Pilipinas 2008 took the No. 7 position by virtue of its 15.7 percent rating, behind 1 vs. 100's 16.7 percent where Piolo Pascual was the celebrity contestant.

Gretchen Barretto: "I can say I'm okay. I'm not super happy."

Nagbigay ng panayam ang kontrobersiyal na aktres na si Gretchen Barretto sa isang local na pahayagan nitong Linggo (March 9) upang muling i-promote ang kanyang kauna-unahang music CD na Unexpected.

Sa simula pa lang ng interview ay naungkat na ang pagka-media magnet ni Gretchen, 38, isang dating sexy star na naging mistress ng bilyonaryong si Antonio "Tonyboy" Cojuangco, 56. Ngayon ay gustong bumalik sa limelight si Gretchen sa pamamagitan ng isang CD na naglalaman ng mga luma't emosyonal na mga awitin.

"I really don't know. Because I'm fascinated by Gretchen, too. So I really can't imagine why they're not fascinated with Gretchen," natatawang sagot ni Gretchen sa tanong kung bakit fascinated ang mga tao sa kanya.

"I'm fascinated by the fact that they're fascinated with me... I play along. I play the game, because these wealthy, pa-sosyal people, I think they're so damn bored with their life. If my mission in life is to entertain these rich, bored people, so be it.

"Naaaliw din naman ako, e," pag-amin ni Gretchen. "I love it when I enter the room and I see that they're all staring at me. And I'm like, ‘yeah?'"

Dagdag pa niya, "Not because they're wealthy, I'm going to forever sit there. My wealth is what I believe in and how I can fend for myself. That is mine."

Nakasulat sa artikulo na kasama ni Gretchen si Tonyboy at ang kanilang anak na si Dominique, 12, sa Estados Unidos sa pinaka-latest na check-up ng negosyante. Mali ang impormasyon ng pahayagan dahil hindi sumama si Gretchen kay Tonyboy.

Sa past interviews ni Gretchen, sinabi ng aktres na kailangan daw may kasama rito sa Pilipinas ang anak nilang si Dominique kung sakaling may mangyari. Magulo raw kasi ang political situation sa Pilipinas ngayon dahil sa sunud-sunod na rally ng mga iba't ibang grupo na nagnanais na mapatalsik sa puwesto si Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

LESSONS LEARNED. Nang tanungin naman kung ano ang mga natutunan niya sa lahat ng mga pinagdaanan niya sa buhay, ito ang sagot ni Gretchen: "What have I learned? Not to fear. Every low moment in my life is a defining moment. I've always come out better."

Kaugnay naman ng kanyang debut music album, sinabi ni Gretchen na ngayon niya lang naisipang gumawa ng CD dahil ngayon lang niya naramdaman ang mga emosyon na nilalaman ng bawat kantang nakapaloob sa kanyang album.

"Falling in love, you must have that emotion. You can't sing a love song without being in love," pahayag ni Gretchen.

Nang tanungin kung in love ba siya ngayon, "I don't know. What do you think?" balik-tanong na kasagutan niya.

Sa tingin kaya ni Gretchen ay ang mga choices na ginagawa niya ay siya ring nagde-define sa kanya?

"Hey, I'm human," sagot ni Gretchen. "I make mistakes. No one is perfect. The difference is, my mistakes, they're magnified. It's all over. That's the price I have to pay for being Gretchen Barretto. And why am I Gretchen? Because they put me here."

LISTENING TO HERSELF. Sinabi rin ni Gretchen na ang taong pinapakinggan niya at tinatakbuhan niya tuwing nagkakaroon siya ng problema ay ang kanyang sarili.

"I have to say this, but I listen to myself. Because everybody makes pakialam with my life, everybody has something to say. But at the end, I always follow my instincts, my feelings. Nobody can stop me. No one. That is me. When I wanna do something, I do it."

Aniya pa, "I make palpak, it's my decision, so okay, I'm sorry. Madali ako mag-sorry, e, that's why I get away with things... Especially with Tony. Also, I think people expect me to make mistakes. That's the best part."

Sa tingin kaya ni Gretchen ay nasa kanya na lahat ngayon?

"No," sagot ng aktres. "Nobody has anything and everything. There are things lacking, things that money can't buy. Like more shoes. That was a joke ha!" tawa niya.

WALKING DOWN THE AISLE. Sa mahigit isang dekadang pagsasama nila, hanggang ngayon ay hindi pa rin mapakasalan ni Tonyboy si Gretchen dahil hindi pa naa-annul ang kasal ng negosyante sa una nitong asawa na si Denise Yabut. Isa ba sa mga bagay na hindi mabibili ni Gretchen ngayon ay ang wedding gown?

"A wedding gown, I can buy," paglilinaw ng aktres. "It's really walking down the aisle. It's not that piece of paper. I just really want the baduy wedding. I just want that day.

"If it comes, it comes. If it comes, everybody's invited. And everyone will know because there's nothing I do that people don't know about, anyway. But I haven't decided."

Bakit hindi niya magawa hanggang ngayon na mamuhay na siya lang at ang kanyang anak na si Dominique?

"It's not that easy because people would be hurt," paliwanag ni Gretchen. "You may think I'm selfish and I love myself too much, but I also love a lot of people. And as much as I want to give myself what I feel I deserve and want and really love, I also feel that I have an obligation. And that obligation is to protect some people. I'm not ready to to just do whatever. It's not an easy decision."

CLUELESS. Ano naman ang nararamdaman niya sa tuwing nauugnay siya sa ibang pangalan?

"I don't always like it, simply because I don't know if people go out and befriend me because they want the attention, the scandal or because I'm just really fun to be with. I honestly get the feeling that they just love it.

"When I say, ‘Hey, guess what, it's you and me now,' they're like ‘Really?'" natatawa niyang kuwento.

Dagdag ni Gretchen, "I don't know if I'll be flattered o maiinis ako. But I'm more flattered. I'm fun naman, ah, ‘tapos I'm beautiful. Aside from that, I'm talented!" tawa niya ulit.

"Why would I want to get away from it?" tanong niya. "I take refuge in that option. But don't you think I love what I'm doing? Am I not being my own person? I'm not going to allow anyone to make me lose myself.

"When I'm just so sick and everything is so magulo, I just turn to myself and say, ‘Today I know in my deepest level that I am an incredible woman. I am all that and more."

Masaya ba siya?

"Generally speaking, I can say I'm okay. I'm not super happy," sagot niya.

Kim Chiu chosen to play lead role in Pinoy version of Koreanovela "My Girl"

Hindi napigilan ng young actress na si Kim Chiu ang mapaluha sa katuwaan dahil sa sorpresang natanggap niya during the press conference of the new season of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teen Edition Plus and Pinoy Dream Academy kahapon, March 7, sa 9501 restaurant ng ABS-CBN.

Kasama ni Kim sa presscon si Yeng Constantino. Matatandaang si Kim ang kauna-unahang winner ng PBB Teen Edition samantalang si Yeng naman ang first winner ng Pinoy Dream Academy.

Sa part ni Kim, habang ipinapakita ang AVP ng kanyang pagsisimula sa PBB as housemate at sa mga naging accomplishments niya bilang artista since then, laking-gulat ni Kim nang sa kalagitnaan nito'y ipakita ang Koreanovela na My Girl na naipalabas na noon sa ABS-CBN. Si Kim ang napiling gumanap na bida sa Pinoy version ng hit Koreanovela.

THE CHOSEN ONE. Clueless si Kim at sa mismong presscon lang din niya nalaman ang tungkol dito. Bukod sa horror series na Maligno, ang My Girl pala ang nakalaan na bago niyang project sa Kapamilya network.

"Sobrang saya ko po!" ang bukod-tanging nasambit ni Kim pagkatapos ng ilang segundo na hindi siya makapagsalita nang formally ay i-announce sa presscon na talagang ginawang surprise sa young star ang bagong series na gagawin niya.

Nang makausap nga ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) si Kim, wala raw siyang idea sa naturang project. Pero aniya, napanood na raw niya ito sa DVD.

"Wala! Wala talaga, as in wala akong idea at all. Pinagpe-pray ko lang talaga na sana magkaroon ako ng bagong project. ‘Tapos ayun, nagkatotoo nga siya! Naiyak nga ako, ang saya!" hindi maitago ang kaligayahan na pahayag ni Kim.

THANKS TO PBB. Para kay Kim, wala ang lahat ng tinatamasa niya ngayon kung hindi dahil sa PBB Teen Edition.

"Utang ko pong lahat sa PBB family ko, like si Direk Jilmer [Dy]," sabi ng dalaga. "Siya po ang nag-interview sa akin noong nag-o-audition pa lang po ako, kaya alam niya pong lahat. Masayang-masaya po akong talaga sa lahat ng na-achieve ko, kasi all wishes granted pong talaga.

"Sobrang laki rin po ng naitulong ko sa family ko. Ako na po ang nagsisilbing mother, father sa mga kapatid ko. Napag-aaral ko po sila at naibibigay ko po yung pleasure na gusto nila. Ako po kasi before, hindi ko po nagagawa yung like, ‘Mama, Papa, ibili mo ako ng ganito, ganyan.' Kasi alam ko po na hindi po nila maibibigay dahil kapos po kaming talaga.

"Pero ngayon po, sa mga kapatid ko, kapag may hinihingi sila, ibinibigay ko kasi lahat naman po ng ginagawa ko, para po talaga sa kanila. Masaya po ako. Hindi naman po siguro lahat ng teen, nakakatulong ng ganito kalaki sa pamilya nila. At lahat po ng yun, utang ko pong talaga sa PBB Teen Edition," lahad ni Kim.

Ayon pa kay Kim, hindi siya nate-threaten kung magkakaroon na ng bagong season ng PBB na magsisimula na sa March 23. In fact, masaya raw siya na may ganitong venue para sa mga teenagers na katulad niyang minsang nangarap at nabigyan ng katuparan through the show.

"Basta ako, gagalingan ko lang, like sa My Girl. Kung matuloy nga ‘yon, mas magiging masaya ako. At saka may Maligno pa ko. Masayang-masaya na ako sa lahat ng naabot ko ngayon, sobrang masaya po talaga.

"At saka, masaya po ako kasi may bagong PBB Teen Edition na naman. Ibig lang pong sabihin, may bago na naman pong magsa-shine. May mga bagong teen na naman na matutupad ang pangarap. At saka sa tingin ko po, nasa amin naman po kung paano kami mag-i-stay. Pero lahat po ng tao, may sariling chance sa buhay."

CLAUDINE FAN. After ng Love Spell, ang Maligno ang next project na pinagsasamahan nila ng ka-loveteam na si Gerald Anderson. Kaya hindi totoong after their Love Spell, biglang ipi-freeze ang loveteam nila. Aside from them, nasa Maligno rin sina Claudine Barretto at Diether Ocampo.

Fan daw talaga si Kim ni Claudine kaya hindi niya itinagong during their taping, hindi pa rin niya maiwasang ma-starstruck na kasama na niya si Claudine sa isang show.

Aniya, "Si Ms. Claudine, ang bait! Nahihiya nga ako, e. At saka na-starstruck din ako kasi kapag nag-uusap kaming dalawa, nauutal din ako, walang lumalabas sa bibig ko. Hindi ko alam.... Like, tatanungin niya ako, ‘Kumusta ka na?' Wala, walang lumalabas sa akin. Sobrang nahihiya ako."

Naitanong din ng PEP kay Kim ang totoong estado sa kanilang dalawa ni Gerald dahil may mga bali-balitang hiwalay na sila.

"Hiwalay? Hindi pa nga po nagiging kami, maghihiwalay na kami?" natatawa niyang sagot.

"Break na ba kami? Hindi pa nga nagiging kami, break na kami?" tawa niya ulit. "Basta okay naman po kami. Good friends. Nagha-hang out kami minsan kasama yung mga barkada niya, mga PBB dati.

"Actually, hindi ko rin po alam kung saan nanggagaling yung isyu na break na kami. Nababasa ko nga rin po. Pero wala lang, nagbibiruan na lang po kami."

Sinabi ng PEP kay Kim na posibleng kaya may isyu ng breakup sa kanila dahil mas marami ang naniniwalang naging sila talaga at patuloy lang nila itong idine-deny.

"Ganun po? Hindi po, siguro po, kapag eighteen na ko," ang maikling tugon ni Kim.

KIM TURNS 18. On April 19, Kim is turning 18. Pero wala pa raw siyang plano kung may magaganap na debut party on her special day.

"Wala pa pong plano. Matagal pa naman, sa susunod na buwan pa naman yan."

Pero kung siya raw ang tatanungin, wala rin daw siyang kaibahan sa ibang teenager na pangarap ang magkaroon ng debut party talaga.

"Kaso nahihiya ako, e," natatawa niyang sabi. "Kasi wala akong masyadong friends, baka wala masyadong pumunta. Baka wala akong bisita. Siyempre po, lahat naman ng girls, dream nila yung talagang debung-debut. Pero ako, hindi ko pa alam... Nahihiya ako, e. Gusto ko, pero nahihiya ako."

Hindi naman itinanggi ni Kim na kung sakaling magkakaroon man daw siya ng party, definitely raw ay si Gerald ang escort niya.

"Opo, si Gerald. Wala naman po akong ibang ka-close, e," sambit niya.

Not too long ago, a young Chinese-Cebuana and a native of Rizal both dreamed of making it big in the world of showbiz and music, respectively. Today, Kim Chiu and Yeng Constantino can proudly say that dreams do come true.

Yesterday, March 7, ABS-CBN formally launched the start of the reality programs targeting the youth of today. Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus has started giving away 30 Dream Keys to teenagers all over the country. These coveted items signify that they have the chance to enter the PBB house once they surpass all the challenges posed by Big Brother. The 30 short listed candidates will be trimmed down until the 12 tenants of PBB Teen Edition Plus will be revealed.

If you're wondering why there's a Plus at the end of the title of the show, it refers to the addition of a new host—Luis Manzano. He will be hosting the latest edition of PBB along with Toni Gonzaga, Mariel Rodriguez, and Bianca Gonzalez.

On the other hand, Pinoy Dream Academy is sporting a new logo and expecting a new set of aspiring singers who will be given the opportunity to train under talented singers and develop their vocal skills inside the Academy. It will be headed by a new Headmaster in the person of Ryan Cayabyab, who replaces Jim Paredes.

Now that a new batch of dreamers will be joining the same contest that gave them fame and success, do Kim and Yeng feel threatened by the impending competition?

Yeng answered by saying that it is up to her to ensure her staying power in the industry.

"Dapat nga po maging masaya kami na may bagong kabataan na katulad namin na nangarap. Alam namin ang pakiramdam nun, kung paano sila nag-aspire at sila naman yung magkakaroon ng time kasi nakuha na namin yung gusto namin. Nasa part na po namin kung paano kami mag-i-istay.

"Time naman po nila para tuparin yung pangarap nila. Dapat po talaga masaya kami," said Yeng.

For her part, Kim says, "Lahat naman po ng tao may sariling chance sa buhay kung magiging artista sila. May kanya-kanyang chance ang tao."

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS. Jilmer Dy recalls the reasons why Kim stood out during the auditions of the reality TV show. "Si Kim kasi sobrang natural. Noong umakyat siya sa stage, kinukurot daw niya yung pisngi niya kasi hindi siya naka makeup...gusto niyang magmukhang naka-blush on. Natural lang, kapag kailangang ngumiti, ngumingiti siya. Kung ano yung nakita namin noon, yun din yung nakikita ngayon.

"Saka nakikita mo yung sparkle ‘pag umakyat na siya onstage, no matter how raw, may gut feel ka. Parang itong taong ito would be good TV material," says the senior story editor of PBB Teen Edition Plus.

As for Yeng, she says that she had an embarrassing moment when she auditioned for PDA. "'Di ko talaga malilimutan ang audition ko kasi, di ba, hindi pa pinatapos ni Direk [Lauren Dyogi of PDA] yung kanta ko 'tapos sabi niya lang ‘thank you.' E, ako naman sabi ko, ‘thank you lang po? Ganun lang po?'

"Natawa lang siya and ayun, pinapirma ako [sa registration]. Kung di ko ginawa yun, siguro hindi ako natanggap," says the singer-songwriter.

The future looks especially bright for these two female stars especially since Kim has been chosen to star in the Filipino remake of the hit Korean Tv series My Girl. The Chinese-Cebuana will also star with Gerald Anderson in Claudine Barretto's comeback TV series Maligno.

Yeng, on the other hand, has just released her second album titled Journey and is expected to join the cast of the youth-oriented show Astigs. She has been taking up acting workshops to prepare her for more challenging roles.

Juan Manuel Marquez: Age not a factor in tiff vs Manny Pacquiao

WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez believes age would not be a factor when he faces Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 15.

In a transcription of his pre-fight press conference posted on www.philboxing.com, Marquez said he is even a stronger fighter now compared to the first outing with Pacquiao four years ago.

“My age won't be an issue in the fight. I can tell you right now that I feel better than ever. I feel so strong, so prepared for this fight,” he said.

He added that his rematch with the Filipino bomber will be different compared to their first meeting since both him and Pacquiao have improved through the years.

“Well it's going to be different because, obviously, it's now four years later, and I have acquired more experience… I think I have more speed. Manny Pacquiao has also changed. He has become a different fighter. Because of the styles, that's why I'm saying that it's going to be totally different,” said Marquez.

He admitted that Pacquiao is a “very fast and strong fighter” but he said he has done the necessary adjustments.

“He has strong punch and that's all I can I worry about. But I'm prepared and I'm ready for that. I have done a pretty good enough job in the gym conditioning that I think I'm going to win. I'm going to win. I have everything to give Manny Pacquiao,” said Marquez.

Sports analysts earlier said that aside from Pacquiao’s vastly improved skills, age factor would possibly affect Marquez since he is already 34 while the Filipino is just 29.

Pacquiao said he has trained heavier than before for his upcoming match with Marquez, who he acknowledged as a “dangerous opponent.”

He also tries to motivate himself to take his opponent seriously.

“I’m trying to re-discover my thirst for the big fights, my thirst for winning, just like when I was starting my career. It’s going back to my mind, my thirst for fighting, and winning,” he said.

The first time Pacquiao and Marquez fought was in 2004. The fight held at the MGM Grand ended in a controversial draw after he knocked down the Mexican three times in the first round, but lost most of the latter rounds.

Hillary Clinton Wins Primaries In Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island; John McCain Clinches Republican Nomination

Barack Obama only snags Vermont during crucial batch of contests; Mike Huckabee announces exit from race.

A year ago, John McCain's chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination seemed like a pipe dream. But on Tuesday (March 4), the tenacious Arizona senator finally secured the GOP presidential nomination with wins in Vermont, Rhode Island, Ohio and Texas, pulling off one of the most dramatic political resurrections in recent memory.

On the Democratic side, as recently as December, Ohio was supposed to be a bit of Midwestern icing on Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential-nomination cake. And, with 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Clinton won the state by 54 percent to 44 percent.

But early Tuesday night, it was rival Democratic Senator Barack Obama who made it an even dozen wins in a row when he was the projected winner in the liberal-leaning state of Vermont, beating Clinton 60 percent to 38 percent to take most of the state's 17 delegates. Clinton topped the other New England contest, winning in Rhode Island 58 percent to 40 percent, according to CNN, breaking Obama's winning streak and signaling a revival of a campaign that some pundits believed could possibly fold up its tent as early as Wednesday.

Standing under a rain of confetti, Clinton celebrated her Ohio victory with a raucous rally in Columbus. Onstage with her was daughter Chelsea, but, tellingly, not former President Bill Clinton, who was campaigning elsewhere but has been flying under the radar since his spate of negative campaigning earlier this year was perceived to have hurt her image.

"For everyone here in Ohio and across America who's ever been counted out but refused to be knocked out and for everyone who has stumbled but stood right back up and for everyone who works hard and never gives up, this one is for you," Clinton said, beaming. "You know what they say, as Ohio goes, so goes the nation. Well, this nation's coming back, and so is this campaign," she added, vowing to go "all the way" as her jacked-up supporters snatched a page from the Obama playbook and chanted, "Yes, she will!" And, in keeping with the hard-hitting message that appears to have secured her Buckeye State victory, Clinton warned, "Protecting America is the first and most urgent duty of the president. When there's a crisis and that phone rings at 3 a.m. in the White House, there's no time for speeches or on-the-job training. You have to be ready to make a decision."

According to CNN, the Obama campaign downplayed the Clinton win in Ohio, saying the slim margin of victory was less impressive given her 20-point lead as recently as a few weeks ago and that it was hardly a sign of momentum. They also pointed to the negative tone the Clinton campaign has taken in the past two weeks, including the now-infamous "red phone" commercial about national security, which the Obama camp dismissed as fear-mongering, although it appeared to win over a number of voters who were undecided up until the past three days.

With 99 percent of the vote in at press time, CNN projected that Clinton would also win the Texas primary by a slim margin, 51 percent to 48 percent, garnering 1,452,776 votes to Obama's 1,354,553. With just 5 percent of the caucus vote in, Obama led in that contest, though it was feasible that even if Clinton holds on to her lead in the popular vote, she could end up with fewer delegates in the state once they are portioned out. And either way, Obama is still likely to hold a slim delegate lead once all the votes are sorted out.

The victories in Ohio and Texas for Clinton, however, give her bragging rights in terms of wins in nearly all the largest states to hold primaries to date, including California, New York and New Jersey.

Telling supporters in San Antonio that no matter what happened Tuesday night, he would hold the same delegate lead and is still on his way to the nomination, Obama spoke of his dream of building a coalition of voters that crosses barriers of race, gender, age and party. This movement, he said, could potentially turn the page on the politics "that has shut us out, let us down and told us to settle," he said. "We could write a new chapter in the American story. We were told this wasn't possible. We were told the climb was too steep. We were told our country was too cynical, that we were just being naive, that we couldn't really change the world as it is."

Like Clinton, Obama looked forward to the coming weeks, during which he said he would begin a "great debate about the future of this country," not with his Democratic rival, but with McCain, who he praised, but claimed had fallen in line "behind the very same policies that have ill-served America."

McCain was put over the top on the Republican side with projected wins in Vermont by a 72 percent to 14 percent margin over former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, as well as in Ohio, where CNN said he was projected to beat Huckabee 60 percent to 31 percent and take all 88 delegates. Huckabee announced his exit from the race on Tuesday and endorsed McCain.

The determined politician conceded to McCain shortly after 9:15 p.m. ET, saying that he had already called to congratulate the party's nominee and committed to helping the senator unite the Republican Party. Speaking to supporters in Irving, Texas, he also thanked McCain for running an honorable campaign and staying above the fray in a hard-fought battle. "I believe tonight that one of the things we'll be able to say is not only that we fought the good fight and finished the race," said Huckabee, paraphrasing the apostle Paul. "We'd like to have finished it first, but we stayed in until the race was over, but more importantly we kept the faith. And that for me has been the most important goal of all. I'd rather lose an election than lose the principles that got me into politics in the first place."

Standing near a giant sign that read "1,191," McCain celebrated his long-sought, hard-fought campaign victory by vowing to defend the decision to go to war in Iraq and finding a way to leave that country in victory and security, even as he admitted that he never believed he was destined to be the commander-in-chief. "I am very grateful for the broad support you have given our campaign, and I am very, very grateful and pleased to note that tonight, my friends, we have won enough delegates to claim with confidence, humility and a great sense of responsibility that I will be the Republican nominee for president of the United States," he said, thanking not just his Republican supporters, but also independents and "independent-minded" Democrats who helped him avenge his failed 2000 presidential-nomination defeat.

"Now we begin the most important part of our campaign, to make a respectful, determined and convincing case to the American people that our campaign and my election as president, given the alternatives presented by our friends in the other party, are in the best interest of the country we love." And though he stated emphatically that his campaign will be about more than "another tired debate of false promises, empty sound bites or useless arguments from the past that address not a single of America's concerns for their family's security," he wasted no time in lashing Obama and Clinton over their recent statements that they would consider renegotiating the NAFTA trade treaty with Mexico and Canada. He also called out the Democrats' determination to return to the "failed big-government mandates of the '60s and '70s to address problems such as the lack of health care insurance for some Americans."

Gritting his teeth, McCain ended the address by challenging his supporters to "stand up with me, my friends. Stand up and fight for America. For her strength, her ideals and her future. The contest begins tonight."

All eyes were on the race in Ohio, which was expectedly close, as well it should have been, given that Democratic candidates spent mightily on advertising in the Buckeye State, with Obama reportedly lavishing nearly $2.8 million on TV advertising alone and Clinton dropping close to $1.5 million. In addition, thousands of volunteers between the two spent the past few days knocking on a million doors and phoning millions of voters, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Once again, young voters were a key demographic, with exit polls in Ohio of 18- to 29-year-olds solidly in Obama's column by 65 percent to 34 percent, while the Washington Post's exit polls had Obama carrying the black vote in Ohio by a 9-to-1 margin. CNN reported that the patterns were similar in Texas, with young voters going to Obama 61 percent to 39 percent, while Clinton led among voters 60 and older 63 percent to 36 percent.

Despite her own husband saying several weeks ago that the whole nomination process was coming down to must-wins Ohio and Texas — a statement the Clinton campaign has since downplayed — Hillary Clinton urged voters to settle in for what is likely to be a long, long battle, according to The New York Times.

"You know, this is a long process," Clinton told reporters Tuesday morning outside a Houston polling place. Her campaign was already talking about the April 22 primary in Pennsylvania, where Clinton is currently a favorite. Meanwhile, the paper said that Obama's camp was working behind the scenes to persuade Democrats, especially the all-important superdelegates who will likely decide the race, to begin falling in place behind him as early as Wednesday. Looming above all this jockeying was the harsh reality that even if either candidate ran the table on the remaining contests, CNN projected that neither could secure enough delegates to win the 2,025 needed for the nomination.

Sensing victory on the horizon, McCain eased up on the gas over the weekend, inviting reporters to his Arizona home for a barbecue instead of campaigning as polls had him with comfortable, mostly double-digit leads over fading opponent Huckabee.

When McCain clinched the nomination, balloons came down and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" blasted from the speakers. His team also broke out jackets touting the road to Minneapolis (the site of the Republican convention). According to CNN, President Bush will endorse the 71-year-old Arizona senator on Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. ET from the White House. The endorsement could be a major boost for the campaign, which continues to struggle to win over a majority of the core conservative base.

The next contest for the Democrats is the Wyoming caucus on Saturday and then the Mississippi primary on Tuesday, with the slugfest likely to continue until the final primary in Puerto Rico in early June, the last vote before the August Democratic convention in Denver. With her wins on Tuesday, Clinton has almost assured that the nominee will be decided at the convention and that the all-important superdelegates will be called on to break the deadlock.

Inawit ni Carpio sa naturang pelikula ang "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" at iba pang mga kanta.

Pinuri si T.V. ng kanilang director at tama lang daw ang pagkuha niya sa Fil-Am actress for the movie.

"Along with having a beautiful singing voice, T.V. is a dancer and former ice skater. So, I had Prudence become a skater in the circus scenes because T.V. could ice skate. Then, I thought, ‘Well, she'll be the cheerleader because she's so good physically.' As you get to know the actors, you create more and more for them," pahayag ng Hollywood director.

Masayang-masaya rin daw si T.V. sa role na ibinigay sa kanya: "I wanted so much to make Julie's vision come alive. When she would tell us what she saw, it would never be just what's written on a piece of paper, it would be something just completely out of this world. We were so honored to be a part of that. Noli De Castro, Ready To Take-Over

Nakahanda si Vice-President Noli de Castro na manungkulan bilang pangulo subalit hindi niya pinaghahandaan na agawin ito kay Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Sa kanyang lingguhang programa sa DZMM, nilinaw ni de Castro na hindi siya naghahanda upang palitan si Pangu long Arroyo pero handa siya kung saka-sakali na mangyari ito.

“Iba yung handa sa naghahanda,” paglilinaw pa ng bise-presidente kaugnay sa report na handa na raw ang lahat para pumalit na siya bilang pangulo.

Aniya, ang paghahanda na pumalit sa puwesto ni PGMA ay tila nangangahulugan na mayroon na rin siyang “shadow cabinet.”

Sinabi pa ni de Castro, siya ay inihalal ng taumbayan noong 2004 elections bilang vice-president at tungkulin niya sa ilalim ng Konstitusyon na umakto bilang pangulo kapag nagkaroon ng bakante sa posisyong ito.

“From day 1, I already knew my duties under the Constitution as the elected vice-president. Im prepared for that. That’s my mandate from the over 15 million people who voted for me,” sabi ng bise-presidente.

Aniya, tulad ng ibang Filipino ay nais din niyang malaman ang katotohanan sa iba’t ibang isyu kabilang na ang NBN-ZTE deal controversy pero bilang public official ay kina kailangang ikunsidera ang lahat ng panig.

Regine Velasquez Stays With Kapuso Channel

It's final. Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez on Sunday announced her decision to stay with GMA Network, thus remaining a Kapuso.

"I decided to stay in GMA. Mananatili akong Kapuso sa SOP at susunod pang mga programa," she said in a speech before SOP's segment “Constellation of Stars.”

Velasquez said she chose to be where she feels she would be happy.

She thanked GMA president, chairman, and chief executive officer Felipe Gozon and other officials of the network for "giving me time to think things over and for not letting go of me."

She also thanked GMA Films president Annette Gozon-Abrogar "for understanding me," her family "for standing by me," sister Cacai "for helping me out"; and boyfriend Ogie Alcasid for supporting her during the days "that I felt I was alone in this inner battle."

Regine said her goodbye to SOP two weeks ago was a really hard thing to do and promised: "I will never do it again."

150 UP Kids stage 'walkathon vs corruption'

Around 150 school children staged Sunday a walkathon against corruption at the University of the Philippines (UP) campus in Diliman, Quezon City, and called for President Arroyo to step down.

Along with their parents and guardians, the children used a slipper-like, native toy called "kadang-kadang" which they used to chase a look-a-like of President Arroyo.

Organizers of the event said the noise of the "kadang-kadang" will help drive out the "thief in Malacañang." The toy is made from coconut shells connected to a piece of rope.

They added that at a young age, the children also have a right to defend the interests of the country.

Sunday’s event in the UP grounds ended with a short program.

3 dead in Bulacan Plane Crash!

Three people died, including two Indian nationals, after the small airplane they boarded crashed in Plaridel, Bulacan Saturday morning, radio dzMM reported.

dzMM news correspondent Ramon Lazaro said Senior Superintendent Allen Bantolo, acting provincial police director, confirmed that the aircraft plunged around 11 a.m. somewhere in Barangay Agnaya, Plaridel.

Bantolo said they have yet to get the names of the victims, one of whom was a Filipino.

However, these reports have yet confirm the cause of the crash.

GMA-7 now casting other roles for Dyesebel

Ngayon may formal announcement na kung sino ang gaganap na Dyesebel, hinahanapan na ng GMA-7 ang magiging cast of the upcoming primetime soap.

Magsasamang muli ang tambalan nina Marian Rivera (Dyesebel) at Dingdong Dantes (Fredo) in this first television serialization of the classic Mars Ravelo mermaid character based in a comics in the ‘50s. Ito ang magiging next project nila pagkatapos na pagkatapos ng Marimar.

Bale si Marian ang magiging unang Dyesebel sa TV, the same way Edna Luna was the first Dyesebel in the big screen in two successive movies, Dyesebel (1953) and Anak Ni Dyesebel (1964). Although Ara Mina made a special appearance as Dyesebel noon sa Darna ni Angel Locsin.

Ang iba pang mga aktres na gumanap bilang Dyesebel ay sina Vilma Santos (1973), Alma Moreno (1978), Alice Dixson (1990), at Charlene Gonzalez (1996).

Dingdong, meanwhile, is the first TV incarnation of Fredo na unang ginampanan ni Jaime dela Rosa. Other actors who played Fredo in Dyesebel films were Romeo Miranda, Mat Ranillo III, and Matthew Mendoza. Sa 1990 version ng Dyesebel, Fredo's name was changed to Edward, na ginampanan naman ni Richard Gomez.

Nagpa-final casting na ang GMA-7 for the other memorable characters of Dyesebel. Although may mga pangalan nang nababanggit, hindi pa ito puwedeng mailabas dahil ang iba sa kanila, hindi pa raw kasi nakakausap. So baka magulat sila na mas nauna pa nilang malaman ang balita in print kaysa personal.

Ang ilan sa mga sure co-stars of Marian and Dingdong will be the pair of Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal fresh from their Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan. Mga tao ang papel nila rito.

Another sure-cast is Jean Garcia na tao rin ang gagampanang papel.

May nai-cast na bilang si Betty, ang ex girlfriend ni Fredo na magiging kalaban ni Dyesebel sa pag-ibig, at ang syokoy na in love naman kay Dyesebel ngunit as mentioned, hindi pa sila puwedeng mapangalanan. Ang tunay raw na wala pang final cast ay ang mga magsisiganap na mga taong dagat na kasama ni Dyesebel from Banak (ang sirena na kumupkop kay Dyesebel) to Diangga (ang sirenang reyna ng karagatan).

Arroyo Won't Mind Those Rallies!

President Arroyo will remain busy for the whole day Friday despite various protest rallies calling for her ouster including an inter-faith rally in the country's financial district.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the President will attend a mass oath-taking in Malacañang, a soft opening of Ocean Adventure Park in Manila and a series of inaugurations of various infrastructure projects of the government.

A radio dzMM report said Mrs. Arroyo was accompanied by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Speaker Prospero Nograles and general manager Dean Barbers of the Philippines Tourism Authority during the opening of the ocean park.

Lim was one of the political personalities who joined former president Joseph Estrada’s "unity walk" Thursday, which called for Mrs. Arroyo resignation.

But I am also loving, caring, affectionate, thoughtful, hardworking, organized, neat, hilarious, playful, fabulous, genuine, unforgettable, fascinating, captivating, fashionable, alluring, stunning, a friend, a listener, a model, a goddess, a celebrity, a singer, an actress, an aunt, a sister, a mother, a girlfriend, a role-playing wife. A baby...

These are the adjectives which Gretchen Barretto uses in describing herself in the literature of her album Gretchen Barretto Unexpected which she herself executive-produced (with Malou N. Santos and Annabelle Regalado-Borja as executive producers for distribution, and Chito Ilagan as over-all album producer).

“Yes,” Gretchen said with a wide smile, “I am a mistress. It’s true, it’s a fact, it’s not a lie. But,” she added, keeping her fingers crossed, “I won’t be a mistress for long...”

For a (refreshing) change, even if Gretchen is caught in a web of endless controversies, Funfare refrained from asking her whether or not it’s true that, 1). she was driven away from home by her beloved Tonyboy Cojuangco (Gretchen already denied it an an earlier Funfare story), 2). she was being offered marriage by the dashing businessman being linked to her (Gretchen has also denied it), 3). she has been conferring with her lawyer about the subject of “alimony” (she was mum about the matter), 4). her daughter Dominique is mad at her because of her (Gretchen”s) indiscretions, and 5). she and Nadia Montenegro, whom Gretchen suspected of spreading the ugly gossip about and against her, had a violent confrontation at a Quezon City hotel where they reportedly threw not only harsh words at each other but also bottles of water (Gretchen refused to make any comment).

Instead, Funfare asked Gretchen what made her choose the 12 selections in her album (which turned “gold” only a few days after its release), and she very gladly obliged, agreeing to explain the significance of and singing a few lines from each song.

So what was Gretchen thinking while she was recording the 12 songs?

1. Fly Me To The Moon

...In other words, hold my hand; in other words, darling, kiss me. Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore. You are all I long for, all I worship and adore...

“Many years back, I saw a movie (title not mentioned) starring Richard Dreyfus as an old man who fell in love with a much younger woman, 30 years his junior. Then, he passed away. I fell in love with that movie because I could identify with the woman. That song was sung in the movie.”

2. A House is Not a Home

When I climb the stair and turn the key, oh please be there still in love with me...

Asked who she was thinking was on top of the stairs, Gretchen said, “Of course, Tony, Dominique and our little doggy Chuwawa.”

Does she still hold the key to that house?

“Oo naman!”

3. More Than You’ll Ever Know

Take my hand, we’ll walk awhile, we’ll talk awhile, feel my love, always there beside you; I love you more than you’ll ever know...

How often does she tell Tonyboy, “I love you!”?

“I don’t really say ‘I love you’ to Tony. I make him feel my love, I don’t just say it. You know, Tony and I have our way of saying ‘I love you’ to each other. “You know,” Gretchen said, a sad look crossing her lovely face (enhanced by Oil of Olay), “In the meantime, while I’m waiting to say ‘I do,’ all I can say is ‘I will.’ That’s enough for the meantime.”

9. An Unexpected Song

Now, no matter where I am; no matter what I do, I see your face appearing like an unexpected song, an unexpected song that only we are hearing...

“You know, putting out this album was unexpected, so this song (by Donald Black and Andrew Lloyd Webber) is the fitting title of the album. I first heard it being sung by Joe Mari Chan and Samantha Chavez. Joe Mari is my favorite singer. I find him very sexy because of his voice, and the heart and the emotion and the feelings that he put into his every song. That song really inspired me. Since then, Unexpected has become one of my favorite songs.”

Lately, Gretchen has been guesting in TV shows and promoting the album “live” in a mall tour.

“You know why? Well, I want to show everybody that I am really the one singing on the album. Sabi ng ibang tao kasi, inayos daw ang boses ko, Of course, not! Hindi ko raw boses ‘yon. Of course, not! You know, I’ve been singing since I was 10. You might wonder, why did I record an album only now? Because I’ve been busy doing movies and so many other things. As I’ve said, my decision to come up with an album was unexpected.”

10. All The Things You Are

You are the promised kiss of springtime that makes the lonely winter seem long; you are the breathless hush of evening that trembles on the brink of a lovely song...

Are the beautiful clothes, the expensive jewelry, the huge mansion, the high-class restaurants, the trips abroad, and all the trappings of wealth, power and fame all the things she is?

“No, they are not,” stressed Gretchen. “They are only mere icings; they are just material,” she added, looking down at her beautiful, silver shoes that must have cost quite an amount (good enough for a week’s supply of food for a family living under a bridge in this cruel city?). “I am like Cinderella.”

Told that she looked like a diamond in the sky, worth millions, Gretchen said, “I’m a survivor. You have to be stronger, you have to be a better person after surviving every struggle and every trial in your life. I’ve gone through a lot in my life and I am the sum total of all my experiences, sad and happy, good and bad. I have committed many mistakes...I’m only human, too, you know...and I’m thankful that the public has forgiven me and has accepted me for what I am — a sinner.”

11. Love Me For What I Am

We fell in love on the first night that we met, together we’ve been happy, I have very few regrets. The ordinary problems have not been hard to face. But lately little changes have been slowly taking place...

Asked what is so lovable about her, Gretchen said, “I think my being honest and sincere. What you see is what you get. There’s no pretension whatsoever. Do I have fangs? No, I won’t call them fangs. But I assure you that I fight for my rights especially kapag feeling ko inaapi na ako.”

12. Ikaw Lamang

Langit ay buhay sa tuwing ika’y hahagkan. Anong ligaya kapag ika’y mamasdan. Sa piling mo ang gabi tila araw; ikaw ang pangrap, ikaw lamang...

“It was Chito Ilacad, my album’s over-all producer, who suggested that I include this song as the finale. He said, ‘Kailangan may Tagalog song.’ I listened to the song, which happens to be one of Chito’s favorites, and I loved it, so...”

Asked which of the dozens of adjectives in the album’s literature best describes her, Gretchen broke into a lusty laughter.

“I’m a tease. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!”

And then, she ended the interview by singing another line from Moon River, as if singing to herself...

Hindi pakikinggan ng taumbayan

Sa kabila ng panibagong eskandalong bumabalot sa gobyernong Arroyo, nanindigan si Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo na wala nang insidenteng mangyayaring kagaya ng tagumpay na sinapit sa Edsa 1 at Edsa 2 dahil hindi ito matatanggap sa buong mundo.
Hindi natin kokontrahin ang ideyang ito ng administrasyong Arroyo dahil sila ang nasa posisyon at hawak nila ang kapangyarihan kaya’t dapat lamang sa aming palagay na maging positibo ang kanilang pananaw anumang aspeto sa ating lipunan ang pag-uusapan.
Subalit kung ganito na kainit ang sitwasyon sapagkat hindi lamang mga kritiko ng gobyerno ang nag-aalsa kundi ang maging ang dating mga kakampi nito ay nagpapahayag na rin ng disgusto sa kanyang liderato, hindi kaya kailangan na ring mag-isip-isip ng Pangulo at gumawa ng paraan upang mapahinahon ang grupo o sektor na kumukondena sa kanyang pamamahala?

Sa pagkakataong ito hindi na pupuwedeng idaan sa pagtataray o pagpapa-cute ang mga ibinabatong isyu dahil hindi na ito bumebenta sa taumbayan.
Ang dapat gawin ng gobyernong Arroyo sa ganito kainit na sitwasyong pampulitikal sa bansa ay pakinggan ang bawat panig at patunayang walang katotohanan ang mga alegasyong ibinabato sa kanyang liderato.
Hindi rin pupuwedeng idaan lamang sa paliwanagan ang lahat. Ang kailangan ay may maparusahang mga personaheng sangkot sa mga iregularidad. Sapagkat kung puro paliwanag at paghingi ng paumanhin lamang dadaanin ng gobyernong Arroyo ang kanilang mga atraso, hindi na ito pakikinggan ng sambayanang Filipino at paulit-ulit na hihingin ang pagbaba ni Pangulong Arroyo sa kapangyarihan.

Esperon: Military would not join inter-faith rally !

The Armed Forces chief of staff on Friday said the military will not join Friday’s inter-faith rally in Makati City even if the crowd grows to a million people.

Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said a million protesters calling for President Arroyo's ouster during Friday's rally will not matter as long as the protest is done peacefully.

“It doesn’t make a difference as long as things are done peacefully without violence. What important here is that everything is discussed civilly. Are they doing the right thing? Will that strengthen our democracy or the democratic processes? That’s important to us,” Esperon told reporters at Camp Aguinaldo.

“We will listen to our mandate, to people who will encourage [us] to stick to democratic processes and support democratic institutions. We are averse in supporting people who would destroy our democratic processes and institution. So regardless of numbers, what will matter is who supports democratic processes and institutions,” he added.

Esperon reiterated the military’s stand that it would not join any mass action that would bring down the government.

“The more that you call the military to intervene the more that you weaken democracy and i hope you still realize that democracy is what we regained in February ‘86. Let us not lose it, let us not weaken that what we gained,” he said.

Last February 25, during the commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the EDSA People Power 1, top military and police officials staged a “Unity Walk” to show their solidarity in supporting the Arroyo administration.

The action dispelled reports that some military officials would defect and withdraw support for the President.

Esperon said there is no need to conduct a loyalty check because of the high morale of government troops.

“I do not expect them to be personally loyal to me but they are expected as they are doing to be performing their jobs and they are doing it very well,” he said, belittling a so-called manifesto from alleged junior officers in the military which called for Mrs. Arroyo's ouster.

Erap to Romulo Neri: Face the nation, tell the truth!

Former president Joseph Estrada called on former socioeconomic planning chief Romulo Neri to follow the lead of Rodolfo Noel "Jun" Lozada and "tell the truth" behind the national broadband network (NBN) deal.

In his speech after the Mass at the University of Makati, Estrada said that he can no longer remain silent with eveything that is happening around.

"Hindi na po ako makaitiis ngayon na magsawalang-kibo na lamang habang nakikita kong patuloy na pinagtatakpan at tinatago sa atin ang katotohanan," he said.

(I can no longer remain silent especially with the cover-ups that's been happening.)

He called on Neri and other government officials involved to come clean and "face the Filipino people" by revealing what they know about the scrapped government project with China's ZTE Corp.

"Nananawagan po ako sa mga opisyal ng gobyerno, lalo na kay Secretary Romulo Neri na alam kong isang marangal na tao, na ilahad na ang katotohanan at matapat kang humarap sa sambayanang Pilipino," he said.

(I call on government officials, especially Secretary Romulo Neri, who I know is an honorable man, to reveal the truth and face the Filipino people with honesty.)

"Tularan mo si Mr. Jun Lozada... kung magsasalita ka ng totoo, ang buong sambayanang Pilipino ay nasa likuran mo kaya't huwag kang matakot, at magiging isang bayani ka rin katulad ni Jun Lozada," he added.

(Be like Mr. Jun Lozada...if you'll speak the truth, the Filipino nation will be behind you so don't be afraid, you'll be a hero like Jun Lozada.)

"Ginoong Neri, nakikiusap kami sa inyo -- huwag kang matakot, nasa likuran mo kami dahil [kung hindi ka magsasalita]... hindi ka patitigilin ng konsensya mo hanggang sa huling hininga mo," Estrada added.

(Mr. Neri, we appeal to you -- don't be afraid, we're behind you...you're conscience will bother you until your last breath if you don't speak now.)

Estrada, who was surrounded by his allies in the opposition, also called on the people to take a stand and defend the truth.

"We have to join hands today and be one so we can ferret out the truth in government transactions. This is not just for me or for the opposition, but more importantly, for you our youth, who stand to inherit this nation," Estrada said to the crowd, which was composed mainly of students of the university.

"We do not want to leave behind a nation that is poor, that is weak, that is heavily indebted to any country -- and this future has been compromised because of the wrongdoings of their leaders today," he added.

"The truth must set us free for us to be able to chart our destiny and for our nation to move forward," he added.

Bacani to Arroyo, Neri: Say what you know
An estimated 1,000 people, meanwhile, attended the "Mass for Truth" at the Makati university.

Among those in attendance were Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, former senator Ernesto Maceda, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, lawyer Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel, Anakpawis Rep. Luis Beltran and several former members of the Estrada Cabinet.

In his homily, Novaliches Bishop Teodoro Bacani called on the President and Neri to speak up and "say what they know" about the ZTE-NBN deal.

Bacani took a swipe at what he called the Palace's varying stories on the P500,000 given to Lozada, as well as to Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio and other local officials back in October 2007.

"Naghihirap ang bayan pero maraming pera para pambusal sa nagsasabi ng katotohanan..." Bacani said in his homily.

The Novaliches bishop also criticized the President's "I'm sorry" speech after the "Hello Garci" scandal broke out in 2005.

Thursday's rally, according to organizers, is dry-run for the interfaith rally in Makati on Friday. Binay said that there will be more people expected in Friday's rally compared to previous anti-Arroyo rallies in the city.

Estrada to Arroyo: Resign
Earlier, Estrada joined former president Corazon Aquino and other groups in demanding the resignation of Mrs. Arroyo.

"Ayaw niya ipaakyat ang impeachment, hindi naman siya incapacitated, alangan namang mamatay siya. Anong naiwan? resignation. Eh di dapat she resign," said Estrada.

(She would not let impeachment push through, she’s not incapacitated, it’s improbable that she’ll die. What’s left? Resignation. Then she should resign.)

Estrada had earlier said that there were other legal steps for Mrs. Arroyo to resolve the current political crisis her administration is facing – including letting an impeachment process against her push through – so that she can respond to the accusation that have been hurled against her.

After more than six years of trial, an anti-graft court convicted of plunder the ousted president. President Arroyo however granted him executive clemency.

Estrada, when asked how to describe the Arroyo administration, said: "Ipinaglihi sa cover up (Conceived of cover-up)."

Estrada also said that he will join Friday’s rally after the United Opposition requested him to attend.

President Arroyo has been hounded by calls for her resignation due to alleged corruption by her administration.

The latest allegations of corruption to hit Mrs. Arroyo involve accusations her husband and a close political ally tried to get millions in kickbacks from an aborted national broadband network deal with ZTE.

The presidential palace has repeatedly denied the allegations and has stopped government officials involved in the deal from appearing before a Senate inquiry.

Civil society groups, left-wing solons and activist organizations as well as members of some religious organizations have also called for Arroyo’s resignation.

However, President Arroyo was given a boost after the influential Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines decided not to back mounting calls for her to go.

While many were expecting the church, considered the country’s moral voice, to call for Mrs. Arroyo's resignation, it instead condemned the "continuing culture of corruption" in government.

PUP Has Bomb Threat Before Jun Lozada Arrive

Nakakasa na ang programa para sa kilos-protesta ng mga estudyante ng Polytechnic University of the Philippines habang hinihintay si Jun Lozada Huwebes ng umaga.

Pero pasado alas-10, biglang tumunog ang bell. Ibig sabihin, kanselado na ang klase sa buong unibersidad.

Isinara rin kaagad ang main gate kaya takang-taka ang mga estudyante.

Sabi ng mga security guard, may bomb threat daw.

"SOP po namin once na-suspend ang klase, nagpapababa po kami tapos sinasara ang gate," ani Jay Telan, isang security officer ng sa PUP.

"Kailangan i-maximize po namin 'yung seguiridad na puro PUP [students] lang, pero baka sa dami po niyan eh may nakahalo na po," ani security guard Edwin Samson.

Tumindi ang tensyon sa pagitan ng mga estudyante at gwardia kaya nagkairingan at kinalampag ang gate.

Nasugatan ang estudyanteng nakitulak sa gate. Nagawang pigilan ng mga estudyante na muling maisara ang gate.

"Ang number one reason nila bakit nila ni-lock 'yung main gate ay para huwag papasukin ang mga estudyante. Huwag makapasok ang mga estudyante, huwag makapasok si Jun Lozada," ani Henry Ynaje, student leader sa PUP.

Nang dumating ang bomb squad, pati sila, hinarang ng mga estudyante.

Pinagsisipa pa ng estudyanteng ito ang sasakyan kaya muntik siyang masagasaan.

Pati back-up vehicle ng bomb squad, hinarang din.

"Wala kaming alam na meron ditong mga estudyante na nag-rarally. Ang tawag sa amin ay may bomb threat," ani Senior Police Officer 1 Modesto Pagaran ng bomb squad.

Maya-maya pa, dumating na si Jun Lozada at pinaulanan ng confetti.

"Kung may sasabog man ngayong umaga, ang sasabog dito sa PUP ay katotohanan," ani Lozada.

Pero sa kalagitnaan ng speech ng ZTE star witness, nawala ang sound system.

"Mukhang may taga-Malacañang dito. Pati kuryente n'yo, pinuputol," aniya.

Hinikayat ni lozada ang mga estudyante na sumama sa rally sa Makati sa Biyernes.

"Puwede ko bang asahan ang mga taga-PUP na samahan kami sa Ayala bukas ng hapon?" tanong ni Lozada, na sinagot naman ng "oo."

Halos 15 minuto lang ang itinagal ni lozada.

Nainis naman ang ibang estudyante dahil nakansela ang klase.

“Nakakainis po kasi nag-e-exam kami tapos bigla ititigil ang klase. Oo, tama ginagawa nila pero me karpaatan din kami makapag-aral,” sabi ng isang estudyante.

Ginalugad pa rin ng bomb squad ang buong PUP pero walang nakitang bomba.

PNP on Alert for Anti- Gloria Arroyo Protest

Philippine troops and police were on full alert for a protest rally against President Arroyo because of fears of attacks by Islamic militants or communist rebels, officials said on Thursday.

Organizers dismissed the threats as an attempt by security officials to scare people away from attending Friday's rally. They expect tens of thousands to join the protest in the Makati business district and demand Arroyo's ouster over a kickbacks scandal.

"We expect our forces to number 5,000," Manila police chief Geary Barias told local radio, adding that reinforcements were being brought in from neighboring provinces. He said police would be on full alert in the city from Thursday evening.

Maj. Gen. Fernando Mesa, the military commander for the Metro Manila region, told another radio station that troops and armored vehicles would be kept on standby at a military camp in the capital to reinforce police if needed.

He said the military was reacting to threats purportedly from the Abu Sayyaf group of militants and also from the communist New People's Army.

"We must all be wary of the unseen hands who may be using the current situation to foment hatred, distrust and chaos," said Lorelei Fajardo, a presidential palace spokeswoman.

"While we all enjoy the blessings of democracy, we must all protect the same from scheming groups or individuals who are bent on destroying our democratic way of life."

Mrs. Arroyo, who has been in power since 2001, is battling allegations of kickbacks in a $329 million telecommunications deal with China's ZTE Corp. She and her husband have been named in an ongoing Senate inquiry into the deal but no one has offered any evidence linking them to kickbacks.

Political analysts however say she does not appear to be in any danger yet. She commands a huge majority in the House of Representatives and has the support of the military.

The powerful Catholic church declined earlier this week to join calls for her resignation.

GLORIA ARROYO UMAMIN NA, NANLOLOKO PA -- PING LACSON

Isang malaking panloloko na naman sa taongbayan ang palusot ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo na napilitan siyang pirmahan ang ZTE-National Broadband Network (ZTE-NBN) contract dahil nagkasubuan na kahit alam niyang may bahid ito ng iregularidad.
Inamin kamakailan ni Arroyo na noong gabi ng bisperas ng pirmahan sa kontrata ng broadband project ay itinawag sa kanya ang tungkol sa “katiwaliang bumabalot” dito. Subalit hindi na umano magagawang kanselahin pa ito noong gabing iyon sa katwirang ibang bansa ang kausap sa kontrata.

Kagyat namang nagpahayag ng reaksyon si Sen. Panfilo ‘Ping’ Lacson sa paliwanag ni Arroyo na aniya’y mahirap lunukin at tanggapin dahil malinaw na lantarang panloloko na naman ito sa taongabayan.
“Mahirap lunukin ‘yung explanation niya, niloloko tayo sa kanyang explanation, alam niyang may mali at maanomalya ‘yung kontrata bakit pa niya itinuloy?” diin pa ni Lacson.
Ayon pa kay Lacson, ang pag-amin umano ng Pangulo na maanomalya ang kontrata ay isang lantarang paglaglag na rin sa mga opisyal nito na todo ang pagtatanggol at pagsasabing malinis o above board ang naturang kontrata. Lalo lamang umano lumaki ang problema at tuluyan nang nagkabuhol-buhol ang kanilang mga pagsisinungaling.
Dahil dito, pinabababalik ni Lacson sa Senado ang lahat ng mga opisyal na nagsasabing above board ang kontrata upang humingi ng paumanhin sa harap ng mga senador ukol sa kanilang pagsisinungaling. Partikular na nais pabalikin sa Senado ni Lacson ay si Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Leandro Mendoza gayundin si Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairman Romulo Neri.
Ayon kay Lacson kung hindi umano ito gagawin ng mga nabanggit na opisyal na humarap sa Senado under oath ay hindi na kailangan pang mananatili ang mga ito sa puwesto kundi magbitiw na dahil sa lantarang pagsisinungaling sa sambayanang Pilipino.
RESIGN NA!
Samantala, sinabi ni Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teddy Casiño na ang tuluyan nang pagbibitiw ng Pangulo sa puwesto ang tanging nalalabing opsiyon nito bago pa man humantong na siya’y kaladkarin ng taongbayan palabas ng Malacañang.
Ayon kay Casino, ang ginawang pag-amin ni Arroyo ukol sa maanomalyang ZTE-National Broadband Network deal ay mas higit pang malala kaysa sa ginawa niyang “I am sorry” speech noong 2005 sa kainitan ng “Hello Garci” scandal.
“The President’s admission about the anomalies in the NBN-ZTE deal is worse than her ‘I am sorry’ speech of 2005,” ani Casiño. “A president who insults the nation’s intelligence with such a blatant lie has no right to be in power. President Arroyo should resign immediately or face ouster from an outraged public.”
Sa panig ni Sen. Mar Roxas, minsan na umanong nagkasala ang Pangulo sa taongbayan noong pumutok ang “Hello Garci” scandal at ngayon ay muling inamin ni Arroyo ang pagkakamali matapos pirmahan nito ang NBN-ZTE deal kahit alam niyang maanomalya.
Dahil dito, mahirap na aniyang pagkatiwalaan si Arroyo at kuwestiyonable na ang sensiridad nitong hindi na maulit ang ganitong mga pagkakasala.
“Bakit tayo ngayon maniniwala na pagkatapos ng pag-amin ng Pangulo ay magkakaroon ng hustisya na hindi na mauulit ang mga ganitong anomalya?” ani Roxas.
GMA WALANG KAWALA
Ito ang nagkakaisang pahayag nina Lacson, Senate majority floor leader Francis Pangilinan at minority leader Aquilino ‘Nene’ Pimentel Jr., sa pag-amin ni Arroyo.
Ayon kay Pangilinan, binansagang Mr. Noted at dating kaalayado ni Arroyo, kahit anong depensa ang gawin ng Pangulo malinaw aniyang panlilinlang ang bagong estratehiyang naisip ng Malacañang dahil nalulubog sa eskandalo ito.
“What GMA did or did not do after she learned that something was wrong with the ZTE-NBN deal on the eve of its signing is the smoking gun that links her to the scandal. That’s also what Secretary Romulo Neri doesn’t want to supply,” ani Pimentel.
“Nagpapatunay na si GMA ay walang konsensiya, wala sa kanya ang sentimiyento ng bayan. Biro mo umamin na alam na niya na may mali ang broadband contract, pinabayaan pa rin mapirmahan at 5 months later saka na kunyari kinansela. Why delay? She should explain, lalong magdududa na ang tao na may hinihintay na mangyayari muna bago kinansela daw,” ayon pa kay Pimentel.
Sa panig ni Lacson, wala na aniyang kawala si Arroyo sa broadband scandal dahil malinaw ang ginawa nitong pag-eskapo patungong China para saksihan ang contract signing gayong naka-confine noon sa ospital si First Gentleman Mike Arroyo na isinailalim sa triple bypass operation.
“Unang-una kung nalaman niyang flawed o may problema, eh bakit witness siya sa signing. Ano mas magandang dahilan kung ‘di siya tumuloy kundi health ni FG. Tumuloy siya despite the problem sa kontrata,” ani Lacson.

ABS-CBN executives to be charged for ULTRA stampede

Nakatakdang magsampa ng mga kaso ang state prosecutors laban sa ilang opisyales at empleyado ng ABS-CBN Brodcasting Corp. kaugnay ng ULTRA stampede na naganap sa first anniversary ng noontime show na Wowowee noong February 4, 2006, kung saan 74 na katao ang namatay at marami pang iba ang nasaktan.

Ang mga kasong isasampa ng Department of Justice (DOJ) laban sa ilang executives ng ABS-CBN ay reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide at multiple physical injuries.

Ang desisyon na ito ay naganap matapos ibasura ng DOJ ang motion for reconsideration ng ABS-CBN upang pigilan ang paghahain ng criminal charges.

Kabilang sa sasampahan ng kaso sina ABS-CBN Executive Vice President Charo Santos-Concio at Senior Vice President Cory Vidanes, ang Head of Security na si Cipriano Luspo.

Kasama rin ang staff ng Wowowee na sina Morly Stewart Nuevo, executive producer; Harold James Nuevo, assistant producer; Norbert Vidanes, director; Francisco Rivera, location manager; Mel Feliciano, assistant director; Jean Owen Garcia, floor director; Rey Cayabyab, at assistant location manager; at ang Ultralink Goldlink Security Services, Inc.

Sinabi ng mga akusado, sa pamamagitan ng kanilang mga abogado, na hindi pa kumpleto ang premilinary investigation ng DOJ sa kaso.

Dinidinig pa raw kasi ng DOJ ang iba pang reklamo laban kina dating Pasig City Mayor Vicente Eusebio, dating City Police Chief Superintendent Raul Medina, at iba pang lokal na opisyales ng pamahalaan.

Sa pamamagitan ng tatlong pahinang order, sinabi ng DOJ na ang isinasagawang hearing sa ibang complainants at ang mosyon ng ABS-CBN sa mataas na hukuman ay hindi makakapigil sa pagsasampa ng mga kaso.

ABS-CBN APPEALS. Matatandaan na noong January 29, 2008 ay ibinasura ng Supreme Court ang mosyon ng ABS-CBN na kumukuwestiyon sa resulta ng preliminary investigation ng DOJ kaugnay ng ULTRA stampede.

Ang desisyon na ito ng mataas na hukuman ay magbibigay daan para sa pagpapatuloy ng proceedings, na nangangahulugan na maaari na ngayong isampa ang mga kaso laban sa opisyales ng ABS-CBN sa mababang korte.

Sa 22-page resolution na isinulat ni Associate Justice Conchita Carpio Morales, hindi sumang-ayon ang mataas na hukuman sa argumento ng petitioner na ang preliminary investigation ng DOJ ay "biased and unfounded."

Hindi rin sinang-ayunan ng mataas na hukuman ang opinyon ng petitioner na hinatulan na ni Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez ang kaso sa pamamagitan ng mga pahayag niya sa media. Ayon sa resolution, ang mga pangambang ito ng petitioner ay "speculatory" lamang.

Hindi rin sumang-ayon ang mataas na hukuman sa claim ng petitioner na walang kapangyarihan ang justice department na magsagawa ng criminal at preliminary investigation nang sabay.

Base sa records mula sa mataas na hukuman, ang National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)—isang ahensiya sa ilalim ng DOJ—ang nagsagawa ng criminal investigation samantalang isang department panel naman ang nagsagawa ng preliminary investigation.

Ngunit ang desisyon na ito ay hindi pa final. May labinlimang araw pa ang ABS-CBN upang mag-file ng motion for reconsideration.

Hindi maaaring magpatuloy ang DOJ sa pagsasampa ng mga kaso hangga't hindi pa final at executory ang desisyon.

UNFAIR AND SUSPECT. Binatikos naman ng ABS-CBN ang desisyon ng DOJ na ipagpatuloy ang pagsasampa ng mga kaso laban sa network executives na inakusahan kaugnay ng ULTRA stampede.

Ayon sa official statement ng ABS-CBN na inilabas sa media: "We find the DOJ's actions unfair and suspect. There is no logical reason why the DOJ would charge ABS-CBN and exclude government officials from the case. It is painfully obvious to us that we are being singled out and subjected to harassment unrelated to the ULTRA."

Ngunit sa kabila nito, ayon sa ABS-CBN, "we will remain committed to the Truth."

Ayon pa sa ABS-CBN, ang stampede naganap sa unang anibersaryo ng Wowowee "was a tragic accident that still brings us Kapamilyas untold sorrow and grief.

"But we have faced it the only way we know how: by accepting responsibility and personally offering our profoundest apologies to the families of every single life lost. Even now, ABS-CBN provides aid and lifelong assistance to the relatives of the victims.

Sinabi rin ng ABS-CBN na "...through the 71 Dreams Foundation, ABS-CBN provides education and livelihood to the victims' families that have become our own."

Dagdag pa ng Kapamilya network, ang responsibilidad nila ay sa mga pamilya ng biktima at sa publiko.

People Power , Alive Again!

Pinatunayan ng hiwa-hiwalay na kilos protesta laban sa administrasyon ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sa paggunita sa ika-22 taong anibersaryo ng EDSA 1 na buhay na buhay pa ang People Power.
Ito ang kapwa pahayag nina Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teddy Casiño at Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Secretary General Renato Reyes nang makatuntong ang mga ito sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon sa sa Mendiola simula noong 2005.
Ang Mendiola ay idineklara ni dating Manila Mayor Lito Atienza bilang “no rally zone” sa gitna “Hello Garci” scandal subalit binuksan ito ni Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim sa mga raliyista tuwing weekend at pista opisyal.
Bukod sa Mendiola, sinubukan din ng Akbayan party-list group sa pangunguna ng kanilang kinatawan sa Kamara na si Rep. Risa Hontiveros na magsagawa ng kilos-protesta sa EDSA Shrine sa kabila ng mahigpit na pagbabantay ng Philippine National Police (PNP).

Ayon kay Casiño na hindi mailarawan ang kasiyahan dahil muling nakatuntong sa Mendiola, ang kaliwa’t kanang kilos protesta laban sa administrasyon ni Arroyo kahapon ay indikasyon na hindi totoong pagod na ang mga tao sa people power.
“Hangga’t may nasasamantala at nang-aabuso sa kanilang kapangyarihan, mabubuhay ang people power,” ani Casiño.
Sinabi naman ni Reyes na taliwas ito sa inaakala ng Malacañang na sawa na ang mga tao sa people power.
Patunay dito, ayon kay Reyes ang communal action ng ipinapakita ng iba’t ibang sektor ng lipunan tulad ng paglabas sa lansangan ng mga estudyante para kalampagin ang corrupt government.
Mendiola ninamnam
Ninamnam nang husto ng mga raliyista ang pagkakataon na makatapak sa Mendiola kung saan kabilang sa nagtipun-tipon ang mga miyembro ng grupong Bayan, Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), League of Filipino Students (LFS), Courage, Gabriela, Kadamay, Migrante, Youth-Act Now, Anakpawis at iba pa.
Sumama rin sa naturang pagtitipon at nagmartsa pa si dating Vice President Teofisto Guingona kasama sina Anakpawis Rep. Crispin Beltran at Rafael Mariano ng Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas.
Sa pambihirang pagkakataon ay walang nangyaring girian, tulakan at paluan sa pagitan ng mga demonstrador at mga pulis at gaya ng nakasaad sa permit, dakong alas-6 ng gabi ay matiwasay na nilisan ng mga raliyista ang Mendiola saka muling nagmartsa at nagsagawa ng torch parade na sinabayan ng noise barrage sa palibot ng komunidad patungong España sa Sampaloc kung saan tuluyang naghiwa-hiwalay ang mga ito.
Nagkabiglaan sa EDSA
Sa Edsa Shrine, nabigla na lamang ang mga nagbabantay na pulisya nang sabay-sabay na sumulpot mula sa iba’t ibang lugar ang mga raliyista sa kalagitnaan ng misa sa pagdiriwang ng ika-22 anibersaryo ng EDSA Revolution na dinaluhan nina dating Pangulong Fidel Ramos at Vice President Noli de Castro.
Ang mga raliyista mula sa grupong AKBAYAN at Laban ng Masa ay bigla umanong sumulpot sa may flyover at ang ilan naman ay galing ng Cubao.
Ayon sa pulisya mahigpit ang kautusan sa kanila na huwag palalapitin sa EDSA Shrine Monument ang mga raliyista kaya nagkaroon ng tensyon sa paligid ng EDSA Shrine sa pagsulpot ng mga raliyista na armado ng mga placard na nagsasaad ng “GMA Resign.”
Alas-5 ng hapon ay parang bulang nawala ang mga raliyista sa EDSA Shrine na napag-alamang tumuloy sa Ateneo University kung saan ay nagdaos ng misa para sa katotohanan.
Misa sa Baclaran
Kaalinsabay ng mga pagkilos sa Mendiola at EDSA gayundin sa iba pang siyudad sa bansa, nagdaos naman ng misa sa Baclaran Church kung saan nanguna sa mga dumalo sina dating Pangulong Corazon Aquino at broadband scandal star witness Rodolfo ‘Jun’ Lozada at ang kapatid nitong si Carmen gayundin sina dating senador Franklin Drilon, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Sen. Noynoy Aquino, Gina de Venecia, mga lider ng Black & White Movement at brothers ng De La Salle University.
Dakong alas-tres ng hapon kahapon ng magsimula ang misa sa pangunguna ni Fr. Joseph Joey Echano na humimok sa taumbayan na kumilos na kaugnay sa mga nalalantad na katiwalian sa bansa.
“Ang apoy sa impiyerno ay naghihintay para sa mga nagsasawalang kibo lalo na sa panahon ng krisis,” paalala ni Father Echano.
Nang matapos ang misa, sinindahan naman ni Mrs. Aquino ang kandila ng katotohanan bago ito nagbigay ng pahayag na sinundan naman ni Lozada.
Nang tumayo sa pulpito ng simbahan si Lozada ay nagpalakpakan at nagtayuan pa ang mga tao.
Sinabi ni Lozada na sa kasalukuyang sitwasyon ng bayan, sa kabutihan sa puso ng bawat mamamayan magsisimula ang tunay na pagkilos para sa pagbabago ng bansa.
“Ang tunay na Pilipino ay nagsasabi ng totoo, ang tunay na Pilipino ay nagsisilbi para sa totoo at maraming Pilipino ang magtatanggol sa katotohanan,” ani Lozada.
Diwa ng EDSA ipinaalala
Samantala, pinaalalahanan ni Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz ang publiko hinggil sa tunay na diwa ng EDSA Revolution.
Ayon kay Cruz, maraming maling interpretasyon sa tunay na pakahulugan ng People Power, gaya na lamang ang sinasabi ng ilan na isa itong masamang karanasan na hindi na dapat maulit pa sa bansa.
Nilinaw ni Cruz na ang people power ay ang kapangyarihan ng nagkakaisang sambayanan at hindi ng armas o yaman.
Ito, aniya, ay ang kahanga-hangang moral power ng taumbayan para labanan ang talamak na graft and corruption sa gobyerno, at ang mga hindi na masikmurang opisyal ng pamahalaan.
Ang people power, ayon pa kay Cruz, ay pagpapakita na ang boses ng sambayanan ang dapat mangibabaw sa bansa at hindi ang Malacañang o ang Armed Forces of the Philippines o maging ang Philippines National Police.

Erstwhile best friends Gretchen Barretto and Nadia Montenegro’s word war has gone overboard. It was triggered by Nadia’s allegedly texting their common friends fabricated stories about Tony Boy Cojuangco throwing Greta out of their mansion because of her rumored affair with businessman Dodie Puno.

They reportedly had a face-to-face encounter in Rembrandt last Feb. 22, which only aggravated the situation. Supposedly with them in the room were Dodie, Boy Asistio (Nadia’s longtime partner), Tanya Montenegro and a relative of Dodie’s.

An insider recounts for us juicy parts of what supposedly transpired that fateful afternoon. It could well be one of RP show biz’s historical, este, hysterical moments:

Nadia shouted at Greta, “Baboy ka!” Greta fired back, “Mas baboy ka! And then she blurted out one of Nadia’s darkest secrets which stunned Boy Asistio. (Clue: It involves an actor with foreign blood who’s making a comeback.)

Boy (who likes gambling) looked liked he lost the biggest gamble of his life. He was advised that maybe Nadia needed professional help for the sake of their kids, that she seemed to have a bipolar disorder. My source also says, “Students pa si Greta and Nadia ay may lihim na inggit na si Nadia kay Greta na dala-dala niya until now.”

My source adds: Greta loves Tonyboy but she’s thrilled about Dodie’s marriage proposal. Tonyboy also wants to marry Greta but his annulment hasn’t come through. Until that happens, Tonyboy will just put up with Greta’s partying and casual flirtations. His only condition is that she’s back home when their daughter Dominique wakes up.

"Tama na sobra na kumilos na [Enough is enough, act now]," said Father Joey Echano, one of 10 priests concelebrating the mass attended by personalities in politics, civil society and business, led by former president Corazon Aquino.

"Hindi patay ang people power...ito ay sisibol nang mas may lakas at
kapangyarihan [People power is not dead, it will rise stronger]," Echano added, adding that the revolution must start from within.

"Kailangan ng katotohanan upang tayo ay umunlad. Walang tunay na
kaunlaran kung walang katotohanan, [We need the truth to progress. There is no real progress if there is not truth]," Echano said.

Aquino, in her trademark yellow dress, was seated beside Rodolfo Lozada Jr., the key witness in the national broadband network controversy.

22 years after President Marcos , Filipinos still Unhappy

TODAY marks 22 years since the fall of President Ferdinand Marcos and although the economy has improved the lives of many, politics remains dominated by money, patronage and corruption, analysts say.

With the media often drawing comparisons between Marcos and the current President Macapagal-Arroyo, analysts believe people have become disillusioned with a political system that is fundamentally flawed and only benefits the few.

“People today don’t have the same fire in their eyes as they did 22 years ago,” said Enrique Esteban, a political analyst with the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), in Pasig City.

“Twice now they have been called out onto the streets, first to throw out Marcos and later Joseph Estrada. They were promised change and an end to corruption, but nothing changed.”

This absence of “fire” was notable after Estrada was last year sentenced to life in jail for massive corruption. There were fears his supporters would take to the streets in protest �" but in the event the reaction was largely muted.

He was pardoned shortly after �" again to little public reaction.

Mired in yet another corruption scandal, Mrs. Arroyo is facing renewed calls for her resignation from a fragmented political opposition and a divided Roman Catholic Church and business community.

Mrs. Arroyo may not be the most loved leader the country has ever had but without any credible alternative, she is expected to see her term through to its end in 2010.

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the fall of Marcos by the so-called People Power Revolution and rallies are expected to be held throughout Manila demanding Mrs. Arroyo’s resignation.

When Marcos was overthrown on Feb. 25, 1986, he left a country on the brink of bankruptcy.

In comparison the Philippine economy grew 7.3 percent last year, the best performance in 31 years, while inflation stands at a 20-year low and the budget deficit is the lowest in 10 years, due largely to Arroyo policies.

Yet while Mrs. Arroyo can point to the economy as one of her major achievements, she is perceived by many as overseeing widespread electoral fraud during the 2004 presidential election, of being corrupt and turning a blind eye to human rights abuses.

“Since Marcos, little has changed in terms of the way the country is run,” said Edmund Tanya, a political scientist with the University of Santo Tomas.

“Family dynasties are still the major force in Philippine politics.

“Many Filipinos have become tired of street politics as nothing fundamentally changes.

“The church is desperately looking for another Cardinal Jaime Sin, who was one of the key figures in the People Power Revolution, and the middle class, who were so vocal 22 years ago, and are simply packing their bags and leaving.

“As for the opposition, there will be presidential elections in two years’ time, so no one is prepared to stick his or her neck out now.”

Antonio Abaya, a political analyst and newspaper columnist, agreed, saying “the families still rule while money, corruption and greed have become an entrenched part of the political system.”

After 20 years in power, many of them under martial law, Marcos was finally ousted after the military split and joined more than one million people in angry protests on the streets of Manila.

For her part, Mrs. Arroyo has survived three impeachment attempts, a military revolt and an attempted coup.

According to Abaya, people have grown “tired of the political noise.”

“Unlike 1986, the middle class are now leaving in droves as they see no future in the country, at least while the political system remains in the hands of the elite families.

“The church too is having a problem as it no longer has the likes of Cardinal Sin, who could bring the church together and speak with one voice.

“And without a recognizable opposition figure to rally around, the movement against Arroyo is confined to some church leaders, civil society and leftist groups.”

The latest corruption allegation against Mrs. Arroyo involves a now-defunct $329-million national broadband network deal with China’s state-run ZTE Corp.

Mrs. Arroyo cancelled the deal amid claims her husband and a close political ally put pressure on the government to approve the overpriced contract in order to collect $130 million in kickbacks.

They deny the claims, but the Senate has launched an inquiry

Gloria Says: No One Can Force Me to Resign

President Arroyo Sunday said no one can force her to resign her post amid the numerous controversies hounding her administration and the First Family.

Mrs. Arroyo insisted that she has still the power and authority to decide the workings of government and no one else, the President said in a speech after a private mass with her her family and friends in Malacañang,

Ako ang Pangulo. Wala ng iba. Ako ang magpapasya sa mga usapin sa pamahalaan, hindi yung ibang wala sa tungkulin," she said.

(I am the President, no one else. I am the one who decides on the issues in government and not those who are not in government.)

The President added that the members of the First Family are not using her position as leverage to promote their own business interest.

"Ang aking pamilya ay hindi nagnenegosyo sa pamahalaan(My family is not treating the government as a business venture)," she said, reacting to allegations of ousted House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. that the First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo and his son, Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo have been involved in smuggling operations.

She also reiterated that she will step down when her term ends in 2010 as mandated in the Constitution.

Though acknowledging two EDSA People Powers—first in 1986 and the other in 2001, Mrs. Arroyo said the international community would not tolerate another bloodless revolt of the people which would oust her from her post.

"The world won’t forgive another EDSA revolt in 2008. Who would invest in the Philippines if that would happen? We all know that I am not perfect but God knows how I worked hard everyday to bring positive change," she said

The President also assured the public that those who would be proven guilty in the overpriced national broadband network (NBN) mess would be charged before the proper venue

"Pananagutin natin sila. Galit ang tao sa kurakot. Ganon din ako (We will make them pay. People are angry at greedy and corrupt people. So am I)," she added.

Senate witness Rodolfo Noel "Jun" Lozada Jr. earlier testified before the Blue Ribbon Committee on the government’s NBN deal with China’s ZTE Corp. claiming it was overpriced by $130 million.

The excess money was meant to the kickback of resigned chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. for brokering the project, Lozada said.

Last Saturday, President Arroyo admitted that she was told about the purported corruption in government’s scrapped broadband project with China before the signing of the contract.

"Nagsumbong sa akin the night before the signing of the supply contract… So, papaano mo naman maka-cancel the night before, meron kang ibang bansang kausap?" Mrs. Arroyo said in an interview on dzRH.

(I was told about corruption the night before the signing of the supply contract. How could we cancel it the night before the signing, given that another country was involved in this contract?)

The President added: "So, tuloy iyong signing pero sa unang pagkakataon, kinausap ko kaagad iyong Pangulo ng China para sabihin sa kaniya na kailangan kanselahin iyong proyekto."

(So, the signing pushed through but for the first time I immediately talked to the Chinese president to tell him that we needed to cancel the project because of this issue)

Mrs. Arroyo said the Chinese government was initially shocked but eventually it conceded.

The President said she was assured by the Chinese government that the relations between the Philippines and China would not be affected despite the cancellation of the alleged irregular NBN project.

Holy Mass on TV for Filipino Migrants

Fr. Erno Diaz, Rector of the Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz in New York, would like Filipino migrants and overseas workers brought closer to God through Mass and spiritual instruction on television.

He envisions a “Mother Angelica” of EWTN kind of broadcast from the chapel in New York. San Lorenzo Ruiz, after all, is the patron saint of Filipino migrants and OFWs.

Father Erno formed the Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz New York Advisory Council in Manila. The group is mounting the fund-raising José Mari Chan dinner concert on July 11 at Manila Hotel.

At the helm are Grace Pasigan, who helped the chapel when she was in New York; Philip Lee, president of the Rotary Club in Chinatown; Isabel Tobias, secretary-general of Presidential Council for Values Formation; Candido Dizon, director of the board of Manuel L. Quezon University; Geraldine Diaz, president of Philippine Women’s University (PWU) Alumni Association; Sonia Atabug, PR director of PWU; Erlinda Chincuanco, presidential assistant for PWU Alumni Affairs; Dr. Federico Macaranas, executive director of Asian Institute of Management; and myself as vice chair. A play on the eight apparitions of the Virgin of the Poor in 1933 in Banneux, Notre Dame, Belgium, will be staged March 2, 3 p.m., at the Luis Miguel Prieto Auditorium in the Sisters of Mary Girlstown, Barrio Biga, Silang.
